Two-Step Verification

Information Technology Services is excited to bring Two-Step Verification to NAU. This important service helps ensure the security of our payroll, student data, financial aid, and other critical information.

What is it?

Two-step verification is added to the normal login process as an important layer of security. This verification process asks for something you know (your password) and uses something you have with you (your mobile device or hardware token). Both elements of the login process prevents anyone but you from logging in, even if someone else has your password.

The process works by either sending a notification to your phone for your approval or by entering a six-digit code into the login verification screen.

Many email providers, social networks, universities, and banking institutions utilize two-step verification methods. NAU uses Duo two-step verification.

Why are we using it?

In higher education, sensitive data is stored online or requires a login to access. The university is under constant attack in the digital space. Passwords are becoming increasingly easy to compromise. They can be stolen, guessed, or hacked. You might not even know someone is accessing your account.

Two-Step Verification adds a second layer of security, keeping your account and important university data secure, even if your password is compromised. With Duo Push, you'll be alerted right away (on your mobile device) if someone is trying to log in as you.

A compromised password could mean the loss of a paycheck, a security breach, or stolen user data, among other serious consequences.

How will it work?

Enabling two-step verification at NAU is quick and simple. You will need to have your mobile device handy to download the Duo application and sync it with the online tool.

  1. Go to id.nau.edu. (currently limited access to ITS and initial high-risk departments)
  2. Click Enable Two-Step Verification, then follow the on-screen prompts.
  3. After agreeing to the terms and services to sign up, you'll receive an email confirmation that requires no additional action.
  4. Download the Duo app from your device's app store and follow the instructions to set up the app.
