Karen retired from a long career in the medical field including 23 years as a practicing pathologist for Southern Arizona Veterans Affairs Health Care System (SAVAHCS) for which she was both Chief of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine and Chief of Diagnostics Health Care. Additionally, Karen dedicated 26 years teaching at the University of Arizona where she also served as the Medical Director of Laboratory at the University Medical Center. Karen served as a Pathology Regional Commissioner for the Department of Veterans Affairs and received the Under Secretary for Health Commendation (2004). Karen is a fellow of the College of American Pathologists and the American Society of Clinical Pathologists and is a member of the Arizona Society of Pathologists and the Arizona Medical Association. Her community and professional board participation is considerable and includes past membership on the NAU College of Engineering, Forestry & Natural Sciences Advisory Council and current membership on the Greer, Arizona Civic Association Board. She was a Distinguished Alumni for the NAU College of Arts & Sciences in 2001. While attending NAU, Karen was member of Mortar Board, a founding member of Kayettes, and received numerous awards including Golden Axe and Outstanding Senior Woman. Karen has two children.
