A few years ago, while driving from Grand Canyon to Mexican Hat, I listened to a NAU program, on an Arizona PBS station, which was talking about how things were going on the Reservation. At one point in the program they mentioned that the Hopi Cultural Center, on Second Mesa, had a motel complex associated with it, but that very few knew it was there, as they didn't advertise... Well, I couldn't find it, either - so, when I got back home, I made a few calls to Hopi Land, and found the place. Since then, I've stayed with you folks, on Second Mesa, about a dozen time. It's a great little motel, and an even better RESTAURANT! Yum!... The reason I'm telling you all this is that no one in the Whole World, except for you and a few of your friends, knows where "Kykotsmovi, Arizona" is, which is the way your Cultural Center is listed in the current American Automobile Association (AAA) guide book. If you, collectively, could bring yourselves to gritting your teeth, swallowing hard, and having your AAA address changed to "Second Mesa, AZ," your business would double... Now I know, or strongly suspect, that there are lots of people in Hopi Land who share this view, but that they are periodically beaten into submission by those who argue for Ethnic Purity. Well, this is just the way things are. One of my favourite lines from Shakespear is "Time heals what reason cannot." In a few years - or a few decades, or a few generations - the Old Guard will die off, taking the Old Animosities with them, and the good people on Hopi Land, secure in their cultural heritage, will open themselves to the world... I've been to Hopi Land once and would love to come visit again for at least a week, if of course given permission. I was ignorant of the sacred grounds when I strolled around undisturbed by the residents. It wasn’t until I left Hopi Land that I read in your newspaper and became “aware” that no one is to venture onto any sacred area. I did not disturb anything while walking but felt the peace and suffering especially around that old church. I suppose what I am really wondering is, why have I been attracted to Hope culture and Native American Spiritualism since my grandmother moved on in 1994. My mother and I learned of my grandmother’s one-half Native blood after her passing because of documents she had in her possession, not to mention my grandmothers baby moccasins and clothes. I hope to visit Hopi Land again and this time bring enough money to buy your beautiful art and jewelry. I am a Catholic Christian who has got involved with various discussions on beliefnet about the divisions in our Church. I have put a message on the Earth Based, Native American board for the Hopi Indians, a message I got from the Mother several years ago to give to the Hopi Indians specifically. I have recently moved to Ireland which uses the Celtic Cross, that is, the Christian Cross with a Circle around the middle of it representing Ireland's pre-Christian past. I am currently working on a paper based on the metrology of ancient cultures, specifically measurements used by first peoples. While reading a book by Frank Waters, "The Hopi" I came across measurements of a tablet from the Bear Clan. After converting its Western measure into old American measure and by including information marked on the tablet, I believe that this piece is a "calender" of some type. Dear Leigh, This is in respose to the eagle feathers. I truly support your beliefs and customs and rights. However because the world is what it is, and man being what he is, you actions along with other cultural groups get perverted and lose it significance. The necessity of the gaining feathers cannot outweigh the overt recoil from such actions. The killing of the eagles do not serve the Hopi as you would like, just as the killing of the grey whale the Makah performed does them more harm than good. Hatred once again will florish, and the needs of the many will outweigh the needs of the few. The circle comes around full circle. Please reconsider your actions.

I am using parts 1 and 2 of Hopi History: The Story of the Alcatraz Prisoners in my class at Hopi High. While I believe the articles are well written and cover the points in question, I have two comments. First, it would have helped to have supporting documentation cited for further examination of primary sources [though I realize this appeared in a newspaper article]. Second, as a historian, I found some of the editorial comments unnecesary (see last sentence of part 1). The facts lead to that conclusion without the help of the historian.

I sincerely hope someone reads this as my search via the Internet has been fruitless. I have a brother who was adopted into our family about 1960. As far as I know, "Thomas Belmudez" was originally named "Tomas Gutierrez" and was 3/4 Hopi. Father so far IS unknown and mother's first name was Clydene. This info was given to our parents by the social worker at the time of adoption in Los Angeles County. Records were sealed. My brother loved his birth mother and the last time he saw her was when he was about 5 years old, when the LA County Services put him in a foster home. "Tomas" passed away in 1996 as Thomas Belmudez in the VA Hospital in Hawaii. He served in the 1st Cavalry Div. in Vietnam and left one son, Eric Belmudez, who resides in Pomona, CA. I have a promise to keep now that my brother is no longer here. A promise to find his true blood family. I've heard that in the 1950's American Indians were often talked into giving up their children for adoption in urban settings or when they were having difficulty adjusting to white man ways. The cirle needs to be completed for both my brother's spirit and for the Hopi Clan of his bloodline. Can anyone lead me in the right direction? Are others having the same trouble as I. Is there someone or somewhere that people like "Tomas" could have and still can go to. Do not forget THE STOLEN ONES WHO NEED TO KNOW THE ELDERS OF THEIR PAST AND THE FAMILIES OF THIER PRESENT. Last Saturday I drove over 200 miles to come to the Hopi reservation in Arizona. I was sorry I did! Your cultural center was closed! I went to several places and discovered that all you want from us "whites" is our money. Talk is cheap. Web sights are not the same as reaching out and touching people in person. I have renamed your people "the HopeLess nation". I am a monk who has traveled India and met may great spirits. Each place I visited reached out with love and kindness to share their teaching and help others grow toward God. Your reservation was the most UNfriendly place I have ever been to. This saddens me greatly. May God teach your people to reach out to stranges no matter what race He has placed them in and share the knowledge He has blessed your with. Terry

My name is Kazumasa Horikiri. I am an instructor in the Department of Early Childhood Education at Aoyama Gakuin Women's Junior College in Tokyo, Japan. I teach courses in theater. I have a deep respect for the Hopi culture. I am interested in Hopi early childhood and elementary education. i oppose the use of wupatki national monument for harvesting of eaglets to sacrifice for alleged religious purposes. hiding under religious freedom as the reason to kill eaglets exposes the hopi tribe even more to my disdain. the monument is for all citizens of this country and the eagles deserve to have their freedom as well. the hopis should change with the times. many cultures have done so to be more in tune with their neighbor. the aztecs used to sacrifice humans. what will the hopis do when there are no more eagles? what animal will you sacrifice next? you should be preserving this fine raptor like the rest of us are trying to do- not killing it. change your practice to adapt to the environmental times. i am discouraged by your attempts to use our monument for selfish, self interests. help us concerned about wildlife preserve not destroy. sincerely, beth mcdonald

We had a delicious meal at the Day's home in celebration of Ceremonial Dances. I thank you. The highlight of my visit was the opportunity to witness 2 sacred Katchina dances. I sobbed through the second of the dances (in the village where the Days live). It was one of the most moving experiences in my life. Dear people of Hopi (Traditionalist, Progressive or otherwise): I am from the Netherlands and I visited Hopiland in 1986. I know there are many people from Europe - especially Holland, Germany and France - who claim to have a special affection for the Hopi, even though they do not always show the proper respect towards your culture. I have seen some of those people wandering through your villages, demanding to see the kivas and invading your privacy, even violating your ceremonies by their odd behavior or clothing. Also, I have spoken to some who claim to have been Hopi in a former life. Not too long ago, all Europeans who believed in reincarnation claimed to have been Napoleon or Cleopatra - fashions do change, don't they? You were able to stop the Spanish invasion in the end, but those wannabees just keep coming... LOL. Yes, your patience has really been tested over the years and you are a very tolerant people! Yet, it didn't surprise me at all when I heard that all Snake Dances are off-limits to outsiders now. It's such a shame that the behavior of some has given us Europeans (and Anglo-Americans) a bad reputation abroad. The same thing seems to have happened in other places, e.g. Chiapas in Mexico which I visited a couple of years ago. As you know, the Chiapanecan Mayas are besieged by problems such as poverty, racism, warfare and oppression by big landowners. Like the Hopi, they are also divided politically and religiously. The last thing they need is visitors from abroad who mock their way of life. Last but not least: I used to see a lot of your beautiful Hopi overlay jewelry in Europe, but it seems to have gone out of fashion! After briefly perusing some of your other guests comments, I realize how much about the Indian cultures I do not understand. While realizing that reviving the culture that was so brutally repressed is important to the Hopi people, I also realize that ALL cultures evolve and change over time. Perhaps, somehow, your tribal elders may be able to determine if there is an acceptable substitute for the ceremony in which an eagle is smothered to death and (I assume) its feathers 'harvested'. I can only assume that preservation of the eagle as a species would be of utmost importance to a people that obviously value their ceremonies so highly, rather than merely removing the young eagles from their nests and then raising only the birds that will be killed in the ceremony. All birds molt at various times, or so I have been led to believe, so perhaps those feathers, if they are of the proper type, could be used to make a 'prototype' eagle which then could be symbolically smothered? Perhaps, until the eagle is once again a strong species, the Hopi people would be willing to make this temporary sacrifice that really would permit them to revive their culture as completely as possible?

I am concerned about the Hopi people's attempt to gain access to live golden eagle nests in the Wupatki National Monument. I understand that the eaglets would be used in a sacred ritual, but I must say it makes no more sense in the 21st Century than the Aztecs rising up and demanding to make human sacrifices again as part of their cultural heritage. Isn't there another way to acknowlege your respect for the ancestors? What did the Hopi do before they began that particular ritual? Why not make this the beginning of a new and more appropriate ritualistic era? I hope you will consider changing this ritual to represent an era of respect for all living creatures which have suffered great decline in the age of the humans, especially the white men. I have had the pleasure of visiting the Hopi reservation twice on mission trips, the last time in 1995. Our group was led by Pastor Ken Mattocks who once pastored at the Baptist Church on Second Mesa. We were well accepted and enjoyed meeting and working with the Hopi people. But I have a question concerning jewelry. While on a side trip to the Grand Canyon, I came across some silver rings with oxidized designs at the Desert View Watch Tower gift shop. The salesperson told me they were made by the Hopi. As I looked at them I noticed that one in particular had what appeared to be a symbol of the sun stamped on the inside of the band. It was the only ring with a mark in it so I bought that one thinking perhaps the mark might belong to the artisan. Back on the reservation I showed it to an elderly Hopi woman that we had previously met. She said it looked like it may have been made by a member of the "Sun Clan" of which she herself was part of. I also showed it to a Hopi gentleman who told me the outer stairstep design represented mesas and the curled wave represented rain that the Hopi pray for. I have since discovered from your website that the way to confirm authenticity of Hopi jewelry is indeed by the hallmark of the artisan. But then I read where the "Hopi Arts & Crafts Silvercraft Guild" uses a sun symbol also in addition with the artisan's mark. Now I am a little confused. From my description and information, can you confirm the authenticity of my ring? Was it signed by the artisan without going through the Guild or did the Guild stamp it without the mark of the artisan? Is it common to find authentic Hopi crafts in Grand Canyon's gift shops? Again, it is a silver ring with an oxidized design on the outside of the band. There is only one mark on the inside of the band, it looks to be an impression of a sun, and even the end points of the sun's rays (ten rays) have been oxidized also. I think the basket-makers of your tribe do exquisite work, creating such works of beauty and love! I would love to come out there, but it is such a long way to travel...especially with little to no income and a car that is barely holding together, I dont see that a possiblility any time in the near future! With white encrouchment being such a strong influence upon The People, and with so much in danger of being lost forever, it makes my heart sing with joy to see such love & spirit reflected in the basketry of your people! I am Penobscot, but I live on the Passamaquoddy Indian Reservation (Indian Township) in Princeton, Maine. The Penobscots are barely hanging onto the Old Ways...the language is all but lost... with them pretty much adopting the languages of nearby tribes, such as the Passamaquoddy and Malacite. Thank the Creator for allowing the Ancient Ones to impart the Old Ways to us, in the "Memories". I am looking for a wonderful lady I went to school with in the 1960's. The school was St. Athanasius, in Brooklyn NY. Her Hopi name is Sunshine, her christian name is Mary Francis. We were in the 7th grade, Sr. Gerard was the teacher. I remember that she was only in the school for a year. Her family put on beautiful shows for the children, she has a younger brother, I think his name was "Little Deer' or "Running Deer", he was in the show too. They lived on Avenue J, also in Brooklyn. I would love to re-connect with her. She was just as she was called "Sunshine". She gave me a beautiful beaded necklace that I still have and treasure to this very day. TODAY'S IMMIGRANTS ARE ORIGINAL SETTLERS! And as such are no more interested in our welfare then the settlers of 1492 forward. Being from South America and Asia does not make them any less of a threat to our people or our way of life then it did 500 years ago. WHEN ARE THE SETTLERS GOING TO STOP COMING? My question is: Can the tribes sue former President Clinton over his mass immigration policy and If so can it be initiated in time for the arrival of Mexican President Vincent Fox's visit with George Bush? The information presented on this site is so outdated. It appears that the Hopi Tribe is not really interested in making current information available to the public. My purpose for visiting the site was to find information about future activities scheduled for the reservation. My feeliing is that someone should update the site at least once per week. Press releases from 1999 are interesting if you are only interested in history. PLEASE update your information more frequently.

We are Czech choreographers and dancers working in Germany. Our last piece is about desert and we collected a lot of material in American southwest. We also visited the Hopi Indian Reservation. Back home we are looking for some corresponding title of the performance. Our recent idea was to find some Hopi word that might express some of the themes of the piece. But we could not find any dictionary. Is it possible to find someone who could help us to translate (at least approximately) english expressions (e.g. balance, looking for balance, new beginning, restless spirit, dance, rebirthing) into Hopi language.These words express some of the themes of the desert piece. To Leigh Kuwanwisiwma What is the real age of Waalpi? In the section "The Three Mesas" of this internet site, you say "Waalpi was established in 1690". But in a visitors paper "Hopi: Story of our People" it says: "Waalpi ... second oldest town in North America which dates back to 1150 AD." Please let me know the correct date. Thanks, Roger
