Press Release: The Hopi Tribe

Initial Date of Release: August 3, 1999

Sale of the "Hopi Dictionary-Hopiikwa Lavaytutuveni"

Kykotsmovi, Arizona-- The Hopi Cultural Preservation Office has established its policies and procedures for the sale of the Hopi Dictionary-Hopiikwa Lavaytutuveni. Please note that the Hopi Dictionary will only be sold to Hopi individuals who have obtained Hopi Tribal Enrollment. This security measure has been taken to ensure that Hopi people are given a chance to purchase a copy first hand.  Policies and procedures are as follows:

  1. A sale price of $50.00 was established pursuant to Hopi Tribal Council Resolution H-078-99.

  2. All Hopi individuals will be required to show their Hopi Tribal Enrollment Card.

  3. All payments shall be made at the Hopi Tribal Treasurer's Office. Receipt of payment must be shown to the Hopi Cultural Preservation Office (HCPO) to obtain a dictionary. A form shall be signed by both the recipient and the HCPO staff verifying receipt.

  4. Resale of the Hopi Dictionary is unauthorized and prohibited. Individuals who obtain the Hopi Dictionary for re-sale will no longer be eligible for any special tribal promotions or sales of the Hopi Dictionary. Only one copy is available for purchase by any one individual. As demand decreases and more copies become available, individuals will be able to purchase additional copies.

  5. The Hopi Tribal Council's intent is for Hopi individuals to benefit from the reduced price.  Therefore, all retail outlets (i.e. gift shops, galleries) are not eligible for this special offer.

  6. Hopi programs and villages are not eligible for this special offer to ensure adequate copies are available for all Hopi individuals.  Programs and villages are encouraged to purchase the Hopi dictionary at regular retail price.

  7. Mail order copies require compliance with these procedures. A copy of the individual's enrollment card must be sent along with payment.  Shipping and handling charges will apply to all mail orders.

  8. Family members may purchase the Hopi Dictionary for other family members who provide the Hopi family member's Tribal Enrollment Card.  This service is provided for elderly and handicapped Hopi people, and to ensure they are given an opportunity to purchase their copy.

Should you have any question about the above policies and procedures, please contact Anita Poleahla, Curriculum Developer for the Hopilavayi Project, at (520) 734-3758.  You may also contact the Hopi Cultural Preservation Office directly at (520) 734-3753.
