Setting up Respondus

Northern Arizona University has a campus-wide license for Respondus.  You can download Respondus from ITS. A full user's guide can be found at the Respondus site.

Search by either Windows in the Platform field or by Development in the Category field. Respondus is not currently available for Macs.

Look for the Respondus 3.5 link:

Select the link to go to a page that discusses Respondus’ features. This page also has very important information in red.  This includes the installation password.  It is a good idea to keep this page open after you download Respondus.  When opening Respondus, you can copy and paste the information into the appropriate fields.

ITS download

When you are ready to download the software Select Respondus3Campus.exe (this is how it currently appears – the link may be named differently in future versions).

To download the Respondus manual select the link to the user guide in the Installation Notes.

Select the manual labeled with the WebCT 6 / Bb Vista Personality.  This will download the zipped version of a Word document.

Personality Setting

When you first start using Respondus you will need to set the “Personality” that you will be using.  Bb Vista users will select the WebCT 6 / Bb Vista 4 personality.

Building Quizzes

Review the user guide to learn how to build questions and quizzes in Respondus.  You can also import questions from a text or .RTF file.

After your quiz is built, you will want to publish it to your Bb Vista course.

Publishing Quiz to Your Bb Vista Course

When you are ready to upload your Respondus quiz to your Bb Vista course you will need to set up the connection settings.

  1. Select the Preview & Publish tab.
  2. Select the Publish to WebCT option.
  3. Select the Publish Wizard.

WebCT Server Connection settings

When opening the wizard you will want to do the following:

  • Select Publish to single course.
  • At WebCT 6 Server use the drop down menu to select “add new server.”

Publish Wizard

  • Select Next.

The new dialog window will ask you to copy your URL (web address) of Bb Vista.  Log in to Bb Vista to copy the URL and paste it in the Respondus field.

Select the Extract button and Respondus will “grab” the main information.  If you would like to do this manually just remember the URLs for our Bb Vista servers and enter this in the Extract field:

  • Bb Vista production server: http://vista.nau.edu
  • Bb Vista training and development server: http://build2.vista.nau.edu

Server Information

Select the Institutions button and choose the NAU-Institution.

Complete the Server information by giving this server connection a name – vista or build2, for example.  Also enter your user name and password (your NAU login).  You can also select the checkbox to have Respondus remember your user name and Password.

Once you have set this up you will not need to do this again except to change the settings if your password changes.

Select OK to continue.  You will return to the Publish Wizard.  Select Next to continue.

In the Group or Section drop down menu you can find and select your Bb Vista class where you want to upload your quiz.

The default settings are the settings normally used.

Group or Section

Respondus will upload your quiz and you should receive a “completed successfully” message.

Select Finish.  Your quiz is now in your course!
