Student Learning Assessment

Assessment is the process by which the internship director and the agency supervisor monitor your work performance against specific objectives. This is a pass/fail course.  See the sample syllabus for how this is typically done.

As part of the assessment, the agency supervisor completes a interim and final evaluations of your progress. The internship director will send the evaluation forms to the internship supervisor. You prepare a self evaluation at the end of the semester and submit it to the internship director.

As an intern you will be required to maintain a one-half to one page weekly journal of your internship. The journal should include roles, responsibilities, significant events, experiences, and responses to the questions posed by the Internship Director. The journal should be a reflective analysis of the internship, not just a list of duties performed. The journals will be reviewed by the internship director once a month and will serve as the basis for some of the discussion that take place on-line.

In addition to questions posed by the Internship Director, possible questions to address in the journal include (but are not limited to):

What themes, issues, questions dilemmas or observations are raised each week in the internship?
Is this experience what I thought it would be?
How is it the same or different from my expectations?
What do you think about the work experience as it applies to the agency's function and effectiveness in the criminal justice process?
Does the agency effectively meet the needs of its clients and the community?
Have I been able to use the classroom knowledge in the internship? How?

You will be required to participate in on-line discussions. Participation is mandatory. The purpose of these discussions is to monitor progress, integrate the work experience with classroom knowledge, share internship experience with other interns, and discuss problems and suggest solutions. Failure to participate will result in a failing grade for the course.

The internship director will assign a pass or fail grade based on the agency evaluation, your participation in discussions and the journal. The internship director also will provide more specific information regarding the assignments on the CCJ408 My VISTA course site. These requirements may vary somewhat depending on the nature of the internship.
