- Historic Note:
- Cinco de Mayo is a date of great importance for the Mexican and Chicano
communities. It marks the victory of the Mexican Army over the French at the
Battle of Puebla, May 5, 1862. Although the Mexican Army was eventually defeated,
the Battle of Puebla came to represent Mexican unity and patriotism. With
this victory, mestizo farmers and Zapotec Indians turned back a proud French
army bent on colonizing Mexico and demonstrated to the world that Mexico was
willing to defend itself against foreign intervention. People of Mexican descent
in the United States celebrate this significant day with parades, mariachi
music, folklorico dancing and other festive activities.
