Information for Users with Disabilities
The Cline Library is committed to providing access to its resources and facility. We work directly with NAU's Office of Disability Resources to maintain and continuously improve accommodations for users with disabilities.
NAU students, staff and faculty should contact the Office of Disability Resources at disability.support@nau.edu to receive an evaluation and/or training on assistive technologies and equipment.
The Cline Library provides the following accommodations:

Building Access
On the east side of Cline Library, the entrance has button-activated doors.
There are elevators at three locations on the first floor of the library.
When you enter the building, the front desk where you can check out materials or get help is to your left.
For assistance finding locations see a staff member at the front desk.
Computing
NAU is moving toward Universal Access Workstations (UAW). Generally the software and features listed below are installed on all PCs. Exceptions needing special hardware and available only in certain locations are noted. The laptops available for student check out in Media Services are UAW-enabled.
- Microsoft Accessibility Features
- JAWS
Provides access to software applications and the Internet via an internal software speech synthesizer and the computer’s sound card. Information from the screen is read aloud, providing access to a wide variety of information, education and job related applications. JAWS also outputs to refreshable Braille displays. - TextHelp Read and Write
An application toolbar that works with Windows-based applications and combines composition tools, abbreviation expansion, word prediction and text to speech with a living vocabulary. It can be used with word processors, spreadsheets, databases, email and the Internet. - ZoomText Xtra (available in Media Services Room 143 only)
The world’s leading magnification software. It features synchronized magnification and screen, speaks all on-screen text, echoes typing and automatically reads multi-page documents. - Kurzweil 1000
Accurate optical character recognition with clear, flexible synthetic speech, multi language support, flexible editing and text management tools. In addition to display, magnification and highlighting of text as it is read aloud, Kurzweil 1000 can retain and enhance images from scanned pages. - Kurzweil 3000 (available in Media Services Room 143 only)
The leading reading, writing and learning solution for individuals with learning difficulties like dyslexia, reading comprehension, attention-deficit disorder and other literacy difficulties. It is also used as an effective language learning/study skills tool in English as a Second Language programs. It helps students improve their reading speed and comprehension, and includes a suite of features that make it possible for them to learn and study independently. - OmniPage
Scans printed text using the HP ScanJet 6100C. This scanned text can then be read aloud or magnified using other software. - Duxbury Braille Translation Software
Designed for those who don't know braille and those who do, the Duxbury Braille Translator allows users to create highly accurate braille for school books, teaching materials, office memos, bus schedules, personal letters, and more. DBT is simple to use—beginners learn in just minutes. Yet its depth, power and accuracy are such that it is used by most of the major braille production centers throughout the world. - American Heritage Talking Dictionary
Pronounces words and reads definitions. It includes a thesaurus and aids with finding words partially or incorrectly spelled.
Equipment
Adjustable computer workstations are available throughout the library building.
The Assembly Hall offers auditory assistance through individual headphones with adjustable volume controls to amplify the house speaker system.
Media Services has two screening rooms with 27″ color televisions with built-in closed caption decoders.
Media Services room 143 houses the library's assistive technologies which are not available throughout the building. These include:
- Headphones (which can also be checked out from Media Services for use anywhere within the building)
- VersaPoint Duo Braille Embosser
- Aladdin Genie, which enlarges printed materials
- 2 Epson 3170 photo scanners, which scan printed text for speech synthesis or enlargement
- Large-Print Keyboard with white letters on a black background
- 2 Dell Optiplex 270 PCs
- One 19″ monitor
- One 21″ monitor
- HP DeskJet 540 Printer
- Adjustable height keyboard trays
- Chair with adjustable height, seat, and back
Services
The Cline Library staff provides book and periodical retrieval services and other physical access assistance upon request. Please be aware that the retrieval of items may require additional time. It may be necessary to leave your request with staff and then return at another time to pick up your materials.
Check-Out Services staff will copy and print materials at self-service prices if you are unable to operate the library's self-service copiers and microform printers.
