FLAGSTAFF - Kent sophomore midfielder Nicole Downey converted a penalty kick at the 65:22 mark of the match Sunday afternoon, allowing the Golden Flashes (12-6-1) to post a 1-0 win over the Northern Arizona women's soccer team. Kent became the second team to shut out the Jacks at home in 1998.
Kent goalkeeper Angela Snow carded nine saves in a match that the Jacks dominated in shots, taking 15 to the Golden Flashes' eight.
"Today's goal was not so much to win as it was to keep all of our starters healthy," said head coach Tracy Custer. "The match didn't mean a great deal but we wanted to give some playing time to our substitutes."
The Jacks (8-10-0), finishing in third place in the Big Sky Conference, now prepare for the conference tournament in Ogden, Utah, hosted by regular-season champion Weber State. NAU plays Thursday against either top-seed Weber State or No. 2 Montana, pending the result of Sunday's Eastern Washington-Montana match. The tournament championship will be played Saturday at noon.
