The streak is over!
NAU women's soccer shocks league-leader Weber

OGDEN, Utah Freshman forward Holly Jones scored two goals and freshman goalkeeper Erin Beckman withstood 27 shots Saturday afternoon, as the Northern Arizona women's soccer team (7-9-0, 3-3 Big Sky) broke a 14-match road losing streak by upsetting Big Sky Conference leader Weber State, 2-0, before 344 fans. It was the first time that the Wildcats have been shut out in 1998.

The win is the first conference road victory for the Jacks in the program's short history. The only other road win was at Utah State Aug. 30, 1997.

Jones tallied the eventual game-winner, her 10th goal of the season and third game-winner, on a breakaway at the 12:51 mark of the match. She then tallied an insurance goal at the 71:54 mark. Beckman earned her first solo shutout and third of the season by carding nine saves. Weber State (14-2-0, 5-1), ranked ninth in the most recent NSCAA West Region rankings, outshot the Jacks, 27-10, but could not get through.

"We played amazing soccer," said head coach Tracy Custer. "I can't single out any one player. We had a total team effort.

"We had a team meeting after the Idaho State loss (Thursday) and we decided that there was a lack of heart in our play. Obviously we figured out a solution."

The Lumberjacks, now controlling their fate for a spot in the Big Sky Conference Tournament, return home for their final two regular-season matches. NAU closes Big Sky play Friday at 3 p.m. against Cal State Northridge, then finishes the regular season Sunday, Nov. 1, against Kent of the Mid-American Conference at 1 p.m.
