What Qualifies as a Protected Trademark of NAU?

Any symbol, mark, word, letter, phrase, design, logo, nickname, or derivative that can be associated with NAU and that can be fully distinguished from that of other institutions or entities, qualifies as a protected NAU trademark. NAU trademarks include any graphic representation of Northern Arizona University, NAU, athletic team names, Louie the mascot, the mountain logo, and any other design, symbol, drawing, word, or group of words that has become associated with the University. The University seal is for NAU use only. University entities requesting its use are subject to standard licensing procedures. Any misuse, or any unauthorized representation of NAU trademarks, is illegal and punishable by law.

		What Products Must be Licensed? All products that use NAU marks and benefit from the University’s reputation, tradition, and good name bust be licensed before they are offered for sale. Whether a product meets requirements for licensure is a decision made by the NAU licensing office and its agent, the Collegiate Licensing Company. The foremost concern of the licensing office is to maintain the integrity and high level of excellence on which the University prides itself. Any product that may taint the University’s reputation for excellence, does not reflect the highest levels of quality and good taste, or is a dangerous and potentially harmful liability will not be approved.
		Why Become an NAU Licensee? In order for a manufacturer to use NAU trademarks, it must be registered as a licensee. Any unauthorized production or alteration of NAU trademarks is unlawful; therefore, it is essential that a manufacturer become licensed. The licensing office maintains a list of NAU licensed manufacturers that is distributed to vendors of NAU products. All licensed manufacturers also are provided with camera ready NAU trademark representations at their request.
