Janie and Jeff Biddle Memorial Scholarship awardees are undergraduate students majoring in psychology, sociology, or social work. Eligibility: At least 3.0 GPA; a description (approximately 1-page) of future educational goals and objectives and how they will be used to benefit self and others.
Tony Gabaldon Memorial Endowment is awarded to a student committed to public service. Eligibility: undergraduate students pursuing internships in government and social work who are full-time; have declared a major within the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences; in good academic standing; and who show an interest in public service. Preference is given to Hispanic students.
Anne Lindeman Memorial Scholarship is sponsored by the Southwest Student Service Corporation. For an application and to apply go to http://www.sssc.com/ (search "scholarship".) The application deadline is April 1. Eligibility: enrolled at least half-time at NAU; cumulative GPA of 2.50 or greater; undergraduate with junior or senior standing; pursuing a program of study in one to the following areas: social sciences, education, or health sciences.
Susanna Maxwell Award for Community Connections recognizes a student who has been a significant volunteer in community activities. Eligibility: full-time undergraduate or graduate student with a declared major in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Must have completed a minimum of 18 undergraduate or nine graduate hours of coursework from one or more departments within social and behavioral sciences with a 3.0 GPA or better. Must document volunteer contributions made to the northern Arizona community.
Joseph and Marie Rolle Award is available to all NAU students. Eligibility: The main criterion for this award is excellence, as demonstrated by a high GPA, involvement within your college and student groups and community service outside of the university setting. Preference is given to Arizona resident students and a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 is required. Mary M. Seaman and P. David Seaman Award for Native American Academic Excellence honors a Native American student who has demonstrated academic excellence as a major in social and behavioral sciences. Eligibility: registered member of a recognized American Indian tribe; junior, senior, or graduate with a declared major in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences; academic excellence within the major; must have completed a minimum of 24 hours of social and behavioral science coursework as an undergraduate or 18 hours of social and behavioral science coursework as a graduate major. (Include your tribe on the application. Proof of tribal registration will be required when you are selected to receive the award.)
Melissa Anne Stalvey Scholarship is to encourage young people who have had some difficult times to progress toward success in life. Eligibility: full-time NAU student with good academic standing in any major. Preference is given to a Coconino County resident. First priority given to a local student who has successfully completed juvenile probation and wants to further his/her education in any degree program. Second priority given to a student who meets the same criteria from outside Coconino County. Third priority is given to a student who wants to pursue a career that supports the work of the juvenile court system through a major in psychology, social work, sociology or criminal justice. Applicant must provide a paper (approximately one-page) discussing “What you have learned from your past.”
Robert C. Euler Graduate Scholarship is awarded to a full or part-time NAU anthropology graduate student. Eligibility: GPA of 3.5 or better and demonstrated excellence in classroom performance and internship/research activities.
Panayotis Farantakis Memorial Award for Humanitarian Service Internships are presented to NAU anthropology students. Eligibility: full-time (9+ hours a semester) anthropology graduate student in good academic standing who has completed 18 hours of graduate anthropology credit by the time the internship begins. Students may apply for the award during the semester in which they are completing the 18 hours. The award will be contingent upon successful completion of those hours. Applicant must have been officially accepted by an organization outside of NAU for an internship which is clearly humanitarian in nature; that is, which has a positive impact in the day-to-day living of other peoples.
William Griffen Native American Anthropology Scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in anthropology. Eligibility: preference is given to an undergraduate Native American student who has completed at least 15 semester hours. (Include your tribe on the application. Proof of tribal registration will be required when you are selected to receive this scholarship.)
Carleton T. Hodge Award for Academic Excellence in Anthropology is given to an anthropology graduate student who has demonstrated academic excellence in anthropology at the graduate level. Eligibility: enrolled full-time at NAU as an anthropology graduate student; 18 hours complete in graduate anthropology coursework at NAU; demonstrated academic excellence.
Miranda Warburton Anthropology Scholarship is awarded to students who are majoring in anthropology. One-half of the award amount is applied to fall semester and one-half to spring semester. Eligibility: NAU anthropology major and at least a 2.5 GPA.
Miranda Warburton Native American Anthropology Award funds internships or research experiences. Eligibility: Native American majoring in anthropology whose focus is in health and human services. A joint proposal from the Native American student and a proposed researcher/internship mentor or program is required as these funds are intended to help provide direct mentoring and research experiences to Native American students. The award may be used for supplemental research experience or completion of thesis linked to on-going health or human services.
Audrey Tsosie Memorial Scholarship is presented to junior or senior Native American who is majoring in Applied Indigenous Studies. Eligibility: Native American, on-campus student in good standing with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher, and demonstrated financial need. The recipient is urged to volunteer for the annual Institute for Native Americans NAU golf tournament.

Arizona Justice Educators Association Scholarship is funded by criminal justice educators from the State of Arizona. This scholarship recognizes qualities of personal integrity, good moral character, citizenship, academic excellence, and critical thinking skills. Eligibility: currently enrolled in an Arizona postsecondary institution; declared major criminal justice, Arizona justice system, justice studies, justice system policy and planning, or corrections; 3.0 overall GPA and 3.0 GPA in major; good academic standing; completed 9 credit hours in the major field. Wesley Brown, Jr. Scholarship is awarded to a full-time student with a declared criminology and criminal justice major or minor. Eligibility: must be enrolled as a full-time student at NAU. Must be in good academic standing. Preference may be given to those that can demonstrate academic excellence. Must demonstrate a commitment to a career in criminal justice.
Fraternal Order of Police Scholarship is awarded to a criminology and criminal justice major that demonstrates commitment to a career in law enforcement. Eligibility: junior or senior, at least 3.0 GPA, demonstrates commitment to a career in law enforcement. Preference may be given to an Arizona resident enrolled as an on-campus NAU student.
Investigating Difference: Human and Cultural Relations in Criminal Justice Scholarship is used to provide students with educational research, exemplary scholarly and creative projects:
1. CCJ 345 Writing Competition recognizes excellence in writing and depth of understanding about cultural differences. There are two writing competitions one in fall and the other in spring. Awards range $300-400. Contestants must be enrolled in CCJ 345 and have full-time status at the time of application. 2. Creative and Scholarly Projects Grant provides financial assistance to underwrite the costs of travel or special materials needed for an independent study, undergraduate research internship, a major class project or thesis research. James L. Keeton Police Science Memorial is awarded to a student planning a career in public law enforcement. The chosen recipient is determined based on academic achievement, merit, and financial need. Eligibility: full-time student at NAU in good academic standing; preference may be given for academic excellence.
James Michael Lewis Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student who demonstrates genuine commitment to pursue a career in law enforcement. This scholarship is a full in-state tuition waiver, but the amount can vary. Eligibility: undergraduate; Arizona resident; full-time student (12 hours or more per semester); declared major within a social and behavioral science program; good academic standing; evidence of campus or community leadership; statement of financial need. Preference will be given to those that demonstrate genuine commitment to pursuing a career in law enforcement in the State of Arizona and may be given to those with deceased parents.
Native American Criminal Justice Scholarship is awarded to a student who has declared a major in criminology and criminal justice. Eligibility: must be enrolled as a full-time student at NAU and have a declared major or minor in Criminology and Criminal Justice. Preference is given to Native Americans.
Several scholarships are offered to students majoring in geography, planning or recreation. Eligibility: sophomore, junior or returning senior; 3.25 GPA or greater in major and overall GPA must at least 2.5; financial need is considered; applicant must have a minimum of one semester residency at NAU. Earl Shaw Memorial Scholarship is given to a student majoring in a political science degree program: political science, international affairs, American political studies or public administration. Eligibility: NAU student who has completed 6 hours in POS and at least two semesters of coursework at NAU; GPA at least 2.5 although, preference may be given to applicants with 3.0 GPA or better; financial need; a description of your efforts to achieve a college education and plans for completing the degree program. William L. Strauss Scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in political science or American political studies. Eligibility: completed two semesters at NAU, completed 6 credit hours in political science at NAU, good academic record. Theodore Wyckoff Scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in international affairs or political science. Eligibility: minimum 3.0 GPA.
Vicki Green Psychology Award supports psychology majors enrolled at NAU who have been invited for Phi Kappa Phi membership by helping pay for the Phi Kappa Phi initiation fee. To apply visit or contact the Psychology Department.

Edward C. and Mary E. Mills Scholarship is awarded to psychology majors based on cumulative grade point average and an essay about future educational goals and career objectives. Eligibility: full-time undergraduate or graduate, minimum 3.0 GPA.
Vicki K. Brown-Carpenter Memorial Scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student majoring in sociology or social work. Eligibility: junior, senior or graduate student; at least 3.0 GPA; completed 60 hours of coursework. Preference may be given to an Arizona community college graduate.
Kanan Family Endowment is awarded to students who are majoring in sociology. Preference is given to students at junior status.
Sociology Department Scholarship is given to a student majoring in sociology. Eligibility: essay about future educational goals; honors or awards, college clubs, organizations or offices held, community service, and any additional information that makes you an out-standing sociology student.
Edward E. Walker Sociology Scholarship is awarded based on the student’s character and scholarly ability. Eligibility: junior or senior sociology major.
Vicki K. Brown-Carpenter Memorial Scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student majoring in sociology or social work. Eligibility: junior, senior or graduate student; at least 3.0 GPA; completed 60 hours of coursework. Preference may be given to an Arizona community college graduate.
Virginia Rae Kruner Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student with sincere intention to work in the social-work field. Eligibility: junior or senior social work major, enrolled for 12 hours or more, financial need, academic achievement and character.
Anne Lindeman Memorial Scholarship is offered to qualifying college juniors or seniors currently enrolled in Arizona schools. Three $1,000 scholarships are offered through Southwest Services Corporation. Eligibility: Cumulative 2.5 GPA or higher; major in social work or gerontology; junior or senior standing. Marie Adell Monbleau Memorial Scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate social work student. Eligibility: at least 3.0 GPA; 60 hours completed, financial need, and an essay explaining future plans in social work and how the scholarship will be used. Preference is given to a minority student.
Louise C. Spence Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student who is majoring in social work. Eligibility: Native American with at least 2.25 GPA; junior status or above; 60 hours of coursework completed; financial need; and an essay explaining future plans in social work and how the scholarship will be used. Janet K. Schnorr Memorial Scholarship is awarded by the Women's and Gender Studies Program to an NAU undergraduate student. Eligibility: 3.0 GPA or better; enrolled at NAU; completed at least 30 semester hours. Applicants must include a one-page personal statement which demonstrates commitment to women's issues and concerns; and one or two letters of support from others who know of your commitment to women's and gender issues and concerns.
Women's and Gender Studies Scholarship is awarded to students who have declared a major or minor in Women's and Gender Studies. Eligibility: 3.0 GPA or better; registered for courses at NAU and enrolled at NAU for a least one full calendar year; declared Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies (BAILS) or Bachelor in Interdisciplinary Studies (BIS) with minor or emphasis in women's and gender studies; completed at least two classes in the BAILS or BIS degree program. Applicants must write an essay about Women's and Gender Studies and include at least one letter of recommendation.
