American Institute of Graphic Arts

The student chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts ( AIGA ) includes visual communication, advertising, photography and public relations majors and consists of a network of 40 chapters with more than 10,000 members. AIGA produces two national conferences and student members are offered insurance and discounts on services and products required for professional practice. AIGA promotes professional practice among graphic designers and provides a forum for discussing values and practices that positively influence the profession. The organization helps promote understanding how new technologies are affecting the graphic design profession and encourages participation of designers in the development of new forms of communication and media. Students affiliated with the organization hear guest speakers, go on studio tours and screen films. There are also opportunities for members to exhibit their work.

Delta Sigma Rho-Tau Kappa Alpha

Delta Sigma Rho-Tau Kappa Alpha ( DSR-TKA ) is an intercollegiate honor society devoted to the ideals of public speaking and forensics excellence. Students who have a junior standing, have competed in intercollegiate forensics for at least two years and maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 may become lifetime members of DSR-TKA honor society. The NAU forensic team attends the national conference that provides the opportunity for students to compete with students from other DSR-TKA member schools. Student members are eligible to run for NAU chapter and national offices.

International Exchange Program

The Hanzehogeschool in Groningen, the Netherlands, and the School of Communication have developed a student and faculty exchange program emphasizing the international perspective to communication. Students who participate in the program are provided an opportunity to study with students from different European universities.

The Lumberjack

The Lumberjack is Northern Arizona University's award- winning student newspaper. The Lumberjack's mission is to provide information and an open forum to the NAU community on a weekly basis, while providing professional experiences for aspiring journalists as well as students from other disciplines interested in working on a campus newspaper. The publication adheres to the fundamental belief that a student publication should be free and responsible while observing the same legal responsibilities and standards of journalism imposed on the commercial news media. The Lumberjack provides students with the opportunity to perform numerous tasks required in running a news publication. Students gain practical skills and hands on-experiences that enhance their marketability after graduating. Besides being found on campus, The Lumberjack is distributed at numerous locations throughout Flagstaff and also is available on its website lumberjackonline.com.

KJACK Radio

KJACK is a radio programming service originating in the School of Communication. The station is co-curricular and students can receive course credit for working at the station ( 1450 AM radio on campus and the Internet at www.KJACK.org ). In addition to live disc jockeys, the station can also operate via a computer-based automation system. The program format for KJACK is generally alternative rock with specialty shows featuring differing musical styles and cultural influences. In addition, the station will feature regular newscasts for both national and local (campus) news.

NAU Forensics

The Northern Arizona University nationally recognized forensic team offers students the opportunity to master skills of expression. Students participating in forensics gain confidence and poise that enables them to become more effective communicators in all facets of life. Students may choose to participate in competitive speaking events, interpretation events and /or debate. In addition to the experience, students are eligible for academic credit and tuition waivers. Students involved with the forensic team participate in regional, national and international competitions. The team's consistent record of securing prestigious awards on a nationally competitive circuit demonstrates student and program excellence.

NAU Live!

The worker of the future needs to not only understand technology but be comfortable using it as well. A media laboratory like NAU Live! augments classroom learning by allowing students to see how media messages are constructed and the economic, logistical and technical constraints that play roles in this process. NAU Live! provides news and entertainment programming written, produced and directed by student staff under supervision of a faculty advisor. Students have produced news programs, news magazine shows, drama series and comedy shows. NAU Live! allows exploration and experimentation with news reporting, videography, program production and program management. Students involved in NAU Live! early in their undergraduate careers can move through the NAU Live! system with the difficulty and responsibility of their positions increasing. The programming airs on the Flagstaff campus, on cable channel 44, and in the Flagstaff community. Students with management positions in NAU Live! are eligible for tuition waivers.

NAU Speech Communication Association

The Northern Arizona University Speech Communication Association (NAU SCA) is an association for students who are interested in speech communication major and minor courses. NAU SCA members with high GPAs and a minimum number of successfully completed credits in Speech Communication may be eligible to apply for membership in Lambda Pi Eta, the student speech honorary society. NAU SCA members participate in presenting papers at professional meetings, provide service related to speech activities in the School of Communication and have regular opportunities to visit with distinguished speech scholars from other campuses.

Phi Alpha Delta

Phi Alpha Delta (PAD) is the nation's largest law fraternity with more than 165 pre-law chapters and 176 law school chapters. Membership opens up opportunities to develop contacts with PAD law students, legal educators, attorneys and judges. The organization helps pre-law students meet with law students at potential future schools through a senior transition program. PAD pre-law chapters sponsor educational lectures, panels and discussions that give students insight into all aspects of the legal profession. In 1997 NAU's Phi Alpha Delta Chapter traveled to Washington, D.C. to participate in a mock trial, visit the White House, the Supreme Court and the Department of Justice. In 1998 they competed at the Regional Moot Court Competition.

Public Relations Student Society of America

The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) is a professionally affiliated organization that provides students a great opportunity to enhance writing skills, build a portfolio, network with professionals in the communication fields and meet new people. PRSSA organizes the School of Communication Internship Interview Week each semester. This week gives students a chance to meet and interview with employers statewide. Along with the internship Interview Week, PRSSA creates the Previews Magazine enhancing students' writing and layout skills. Recently, NAU's chapter was chosen to present at the national PRSSA conference in Boston. All School of Communication students are welcome to attend weekly meetings.

Lambda Pi Eta

Lambda Pi Eta, an intercollegiate honor society for speech communication undergraduate majors and minors, is associated with the National Communication Association. To be admitted for membership a student must have completed twelve credits in speech classes and must have a 3.2 GPA. NAU guidelines permit affiliate memberships for students who have not yet met those guidelines. Students who are members of Lambda Pi Eta also participate in NAU Speech Communication Association (NAU SCA). Members are encouraged to attend the Arizona State University-West Conference For Student Research during April each year and participate in service activities for the School of Communication.

National Press Photographers Association

The National Press Photographers Association is a professional organization dedicated to both print and broadcast photojournalism. With a nationwide membership of more than 9,000 members, students have the advantage of attending workshops and conventions; getting reduced rates on equipment; having access to a forum for nation- wide job listings; getting professional assistance in creating a portfolio; entering photography competitions and finding summer internships and scholarships. The NAU chapter has earned recognition from the region 10 director for a wide-ranging spectrum of programs, including photo displays on campus and in the community as well as social events and competitions.

Northern Arizona Merchandising Association

Northern Arizona Merchandising Association (NAMA) is a student organization providing merchandising majors and minors the opportunity to participate in activities related to the world of fashion: textiles and apparel manufacturing, apparel design, marketing of apparel products and the retail environment. Executives are guest speakers and provide a variety of other resume building experiences for students. Guest speakers, workshops, and trips to trade shows provide insight as "real world" experiences are shared between professionals and students. Field trips provide the opportunity to interact with company representatives concerning career paths and future employment. NAMA is officiated by a student-run executive board offering students opportunity for involvement and leadership experiences.

Society of Professional Journalists

The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) is dedicated to the perpetuation of a free press as the cornerstone of our nation and liberty. Members of SPJ network with journalists across the country; maintain career connections; have access to a database of breaking industry news; are eligible for scholarships, fellowships and internships; have special benefits such as insurance, health plans, discounted travel and career clothes. By becoming a member of SPJ, students become well-versed in First Amendment rights, in the ethics that govern the profession and in the relationship that exists among the public, government and the press.
