The School of Communication awards over 50 scholarships worth almost $60,000 annually for students returning as majors in any of the eight programs in the School of Communication. Scholarships range in value from $400 to $3,000 annually.
These activities also offer 47 in-state and out-of-state tuition waivers for select, outstanding students participating in these student activities.

Please check on the application form, each scholarship for which you are applying. You must include all material required for each scholarship for which you are applying. Letters of recommendation are optional, except for the Arizona Broadcasters Association Scholarships.
Activity Tuition Waivers for students involved with NAU Live!, the student run cable television newscast, KJACK radio, the student run radio station, forensics or The Lumberjack newspaper are available for both out of state and in-state students. Returning NAU students involved in these School of Communication co-curricular activities may apply for these waivers through the faculty adviser of the activity they worked for. Incoming freshman or transfer students in the field of electronic media, journalism, photojournalism, or advertising may apply for tuition waivers if they are willing to work in one of the above listed activities. Incoming freshman and transfer students should use the attached application form for activity tuition waiver consideration from one of these co-curricular activities and mail the completed application to the Chair of the Scholarship Committee at the address given on the application form.
ARIZONA BROADCASTERS ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP ($2,000)
1. One scholarship will be awarded to a qualified student majoring in broadcast and electronic media.
One scholarship will be awarded to a student from an under represented population majoring in broadcasting at one of the three state universities.

The broadcast faculty will nominate three candidates for scholarship No. 1 and one candidate to compete for scholarship No. 2. The scholarship committee of the Arizona Broadcasters Association will select and notify the scholarship recipients by July 17, 2008. Recipients will receive payment of $1,000 at the first of each semester from the NAU Office of Financial Aid.
MARIAH DUNLEAVY MEMORIAL PHOTOGRAPHY SCHOLARSHIP ($1,200)
- Applicants for this scholarship must be either a photography major or pre-communication major intending to major in photography.
- Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate financial need by submitting a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) needs analysis form to the federal processor by Dec. 29, 2007.
- The recipient will receive a $600 payment at the first of each semester from the NAU Office of Financial Aid.
- One scholarship is available to an outstanding and deserving undergraduate student who
- is a full time student majoring in Visual Communication / Graphic Design,
- has completed 28 credit hours and
- has an overall GPA of 2.7.
- Selection of a recipient will be based upon portfolio reviews by the Visual Communication faculty. Non-returnable portfolios are to be submitted in a closeable folder and should contain only ten examples of recent work (color or black & white) on 8 1/2 x 11” sheets to the School of Communication by Feb. 1, 2008.

This scholarship is renewable if the criteria for the award continue to be met and the selection committee determines it to be appropriate. The recipient will receive half the amount of the scholarship awarded at the first of each semester from the NAU Office of Financial Aid.
- This scholarship is available to a meritorious broadcast news major in Electronic Media & Film who has
- graduated from an Arizona high school (a copy of your high school transcript must be included with your application),
- completed at least 60 credit hours during the semester in which (s)he is applying,
- maintained continuous legal residence in the State of Arizona since high school, with time spent in the armed services, on official church mission or with recognized foreign aid services of the U.S. government being excepted and,
- demonstrated ability to type or operate a word processor at 25 words per minute by successfully completing JLS 131.

This scholarship is renewable if the applicant is competitive in the selection process the next year The recipient will receive payment of $500 at the first of each semester from the NAU Office of Financial Aid.
- The recipient is selected by the electronic media faculty. The applicant must be:
- an out-of-state student,
- majoring in one of the programs in electronic media,
- involved in student activities at NAU Live!, the student run cable television newscast, and

Preference will be given to applicants from southern Arizona. The award may be distributed for one or two semesters depending on the decision of the committee.
GUY C. BROWN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ($800)
The scholarship will be renewed automatically if the student obtains a 3.7 GPA during the first semester the award is received. The scholarship can be renewed for up to eight semesters for the same student. The recipient will receive payment of $400 at the first of each semester from the NAU Office of Financial Aid.
MELVIN T. HUTCHINSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ($500)

Three or more scholarships are available to meritorious students majoring in the communication programs of visual communication/graphic design, merchandising or photography. Applicants must:
- have completed at least 60 credit hours by the end of the semester in which they are applying,
- have an overall GPA of 3.0 and
- be registered for at least 12 hours each semester.
- Recipients will receive payment of half of the awarded amount at the first of each semester from the NAU Office of Financial Aid.
SANDUSKY RADIO KJACK SCHOLARSHIP
($500 per semester)
The award will be made by the KJACK faculty advisor in consultation with the scholarship committee chair at the beginning of each semester. This scholarship may be used for KJACK recruitment purposes for out of state students.

SCRIPPS LEAGUE NEWSPAPER FUND SCHOLARSHIPS ($1,200 Each)
These $600 per semester scholarships are funded by the Scripps League Newspaper Education and Research Fund and are awarded to outstanding journalism students during their junior and senior year (except for scholarships 6, 7 and 8).

6. Scripps Journalism Scholarships are available, at the discretion of the journalism faculty, to NAU School of Communication full-time students :
7. Scripps Journalism Recruiting Scholarships are for high school or community college students who intend to enroll in the NAU journalism program in the fall semester. Awards are based upon the applicants' potential as student journalists. (Initial deadline is February 1st, although applications will continue to be accepted until all scholarships are awarded, but no later than June 25th.)
8. Scripps High School Scholarships are awarded to one outstanding journalism student from each of the three high schools in Flagstaff. These scholarships are for graduating journalism seniors who intend to enroll in the NAU School of Communication journalism program in the fall semester. Scholarship recipients must work on The Lumberjack newspaper unless other provisions are approved by the journalism faculty and scholarship committee. Renewal of the scholarship for the spring semester is contingent upon satisfactory performance in the classroom and on The Lumberjack newspaper during the fall semester.
