All School of Communication majors must earn the grade of "C" or better in COM 101, COM 200, their freshman composition required course, and their foundation mathematics course.

Advertising

If you want an advertising major in Arizona, NAU is the only place to be.  We offer a theoretical base complemented by real-world experience. By linking with major advertisers like Sony Playstation, Nike and Volkswagen, our students interact with some of the best known brands in America. Our graduates work in agencies and client organizations throughout the West and beyond.

Electronic Media & Film

The entertainment industry is growing at an unprecedented rate across the nation and the world. The Electronic Media and Film program will nurture and develop the student’s ability to create original ideas for distribution in electronic media and film.  This program will ask for passion, curiosity and discipline. In return, we will prepare you to be at the leading edge of the electronic media news and entertainment professions.

Journalism

Journalism graduates are prepared for careers in the areas of reporter, writer, news director or editor; newspaper, magazine, wire service, government organizations or public relations and advertising; lobbyists; politics; public administration or public information; law school or graduate studies in communication, journalism or political science.

Merchandising

Merchandising is a unique four-year degree program in the United States, preparing graduates to work in the textile, apparel, accessory, cosmetic, retail and related industries. In addition to traditional merchandising classes, students are trained in visual, written, and oral communication skills. Students select a minor or certificate in business or communication, which supports this program. 

Photography

The Bachelor of Science in Photography offers instruction and guidance with a professional perspective in commercial photography and its related fields. The degree is designed to prepare a graduate for a career in commercial photography through a blending of academic and practical experiences. Courses in the major along with the communication core and electives provide an integrated approach to communication.

Public Relations

NAU offers the only public relations degree program in Arizona. Choose from an exciting career with public relations agencies, company PR departments, business publications, the government, or a nonprofit organization. We emphasize professional skill-building through a mix of classroom instruction and practical application. Take advantage of our strong ties with the industry through one or more professional internships.

Speech Communication

The Speech Communication program includes emphasis areas in communication studies, pre-law and organizational communication. Speech Communication prepares graduates for a variety of fields including, graduate or professional schools, education, law, and professional employment. This program develops practical and critical oral, written and visual communication skills through individual and group communication.

Visual Communication

Visual Communication offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with two career tracks: computer imaging and graphic design. Both emphases use technology found in state-of-the-art classrooms and computer labs. Creative thinking skills with analytical reasoning are taught, with an appreciation for emerging media and a goal to foster the highest levels of professionalism and visual literacy.
