Our Answers
I registered for ResNet, but I
still can't get to the Internet.
Your machine is on a restricted network until your registration
is processed. After you register, you will be automatically
be assigned a new ip address that gives you access to an
unrestricted network. Sometimes Windows refuses to let go
of your old IP address. If you are running Win2000
or WinXP the WINIPCFG utility does not
exist, but you can perform the same operation by doing the
following
- Click on the "Start" button and select "Run."
- Type the command CMD. It will
bring up a DOS window.
- At the command prompt type IPCONFIG.
- Look at the "IP Address." If it shows 10.2
as the first two numbers you're still on the restricted
network.
- Type in IPCONFIG /RELEASE.
This will show you the same fields but with zeros.
- Then Type IPCONFIG /RENEW
this should now show an IP Address starting with 134.114.
- If these steps don't work, contact the Academic Computing
Help Desk at 928-523-9294 for help.
I sold my old machine. Do I need
to do anything?
Yes! The machine
and its connection are registered in your name, and you
are responsible for any action that originates from it.
If you sold it to another resident student, he or she cannot
register it until you delete your old registration.
Delete your registration here
if your machine has changed hands or is no longer in service.
How do I unsubscribe from the ResNet
mailing list?
You were automatically subscribed to the ResNet mailing
list when you registered for ResNet service. The confirmation
message you received contained instructions for using the
list, including how to unsubscribe. If you did not read
the instructions here is the short version:
Send mail to listserv@lists.nau.edu. Leave
the subject line blank. In the body of the message, put
"delete resnet-l" (without the quotes). You'll receive
a confirmation notice when your message is processed.
We also provide an online form to handle ResNet mailing
list subscriptions.
What addresses do I use for my mail
servers?
If you use Netscape or Microsoft Mail for email, you'll
need to know the addresses of your mail servers. Here they
are:
- Incoming mail (POP server) - dana.ucc.nau.edu
- Outgoing mail (SMTP server) - mailgate.nau.edu
The login ID on the POP server is simply your Dana login
ID. If you are setting up MS Mail, click on the "Advanced"
button to set your outgoing mail server.
If you are using Netscape mail, make sure that the "Move
deleted messages to Trash" option is not selected.
I changed my network adapter and
now I can't connect to anything.
ResNet uses your ethernet hardware address to assign a
network address to your machine. If you change network adapters,
you need to delete the old adapter and register the new
adapter. Your can do both at the
registration page.
How do I connect an additional machine
to my data jack?
The residence hall rooms are wired with a single data jack
per student. If you need to connect an additional machine,
you must use a minihub. You can purchase one at the NAU
Bookstore for around $45.
You cannot connect more than three machines to a single
data jack. If you supply your own minihub, make
sure we approve it first. Contact ResNet.Support@nau.edu if
you have any questions.
What peer-to-peer applications are
allowed on ResNet?
No peer-to-peer applications are prohibited on ResNet.
However, depending on what you are intending to use the
peer-to-peer application for, you may want to review the
NAU
Network Acceptable Use Policy. You are subject to the
U.S. Copyright Act, which restricts unauthorized distribution
and/or use of copyrighted material, including copyrighted
music (mp3s) and movies (avi).
