Setting Up Windows Vista

How do you get started with ResNet? What do you need to do to your computer? How do you register? Where do you get help if you need it? This is the place where we answer those questions for you. 

The steps below will walk you through the process of setting up your machine and registering. For each step, click on any links you need for more information, then return to this page using your browser's "Back" button. 

These instructions assume you're using Windows Vista. If you're not, maybe you're running Win98\MEWinXPWin2000,, WinNT, MacOS or Linux. If you're running something else, feel free to contact the Academic Computing Help Desk at 523-9294.

You may want to print these instructions out and check them off as you follow the steps.

  1. My computer meets the hardware requirements.
  2. I have all the parts I need.
  3. I installed my network adapter.
  4. I configured my Windows network software.
  5. I tested my network connection.
  6. I registered for ResNet.

  • Network Adapter - This is different than a modem. If you don't have one, you can purchase one at the NAU bookstore. The bookstore also carries a complete ResNet package with a network adapter, cable, software, and set of instructions.
  • Network Cable - It looks like a telephone wire, but it is not the same. You need it to connect your computer to the network jack in your room. The bookstore carries them, or you can check one out from the computer lab in your hall.

    Follow the enclosed instructions that came with the adapter.

Checklist IconTest your network connection. 

    Plug the network cable into your machine and the data jack in your room. You should be able to connect to the NAU ResNet web site. 

    You can also check your connection with the Windows IP configuration utility. Click on the "Start" button, select "Run," type COMMAND and click on "OK." A window will appear. Then you need to type in IPCONFIG. The window will then display your IP address and other settings. You should have an IP address that starts with "10.2." or "134.114."

    Until your machine is registered, you will only have access to a few sites on the NAU network. You will not be able to connect to Internet sites outside the NAU domain.

    If you followed all the steps above, you should have a working connection. You can register online from your new connection by connecting to the ResNet Registration page by just opening your browser.

    Online applications are usually processed immediately. After registering, just reboot your machine. Once your machine is registered, you will have access to network resources beyond ResNet.
