Setting Up Windows 98 or ME
How do you get started with ResNet? What do you need to
do to your computer? How do you register? Where do you get
help if you need it? This is the place where we answer those
questions for you.
The steps below will walk you through the process of setting
up your machine and registering. For each step, click on
any links you need for more information, then return to
this page using your browser's "Back" button.
These instructions assume you're using Windows 98 or ME.
If you're not, maybe you're running WinXP, Win2000,
WinNT, MacOS
or Linux. If you're running something
else, feel free to contact the Academic Computing Help

ResNet Setup Checklist - the Long Version
Does your computer meet the
requirements for networking?
Do you have all the parts
you need?
- Network Adapter - This is different than
a modem. If you don't have one, they are available at
the NAU bookstore. The bookstore also carries a complete
ResNet package with a network adapter, cable, software,
and instructions.
- Network Cable - It looks like a telephone
wire, but is not the same. You need it to connect your
computer to the network jack in your room. The bookstore
carries them, or you can check one out from the computer
lab in your hall.
- Windows 98/ME Setup CD or Disks - You
may need the setup disks for Windows 98/ME in order to
complete your installation.
Install your network adapter.
If you purchased a PC network adapter from the bookstore,
follow the enclosed instructions to install it. If you
bought one somewhere else follow the instructions that
came with it.
Install your network software.
Test your network connection.
Plug the network cable into your machine and the data
jack in your room. You should be able to connect
to the NAU ResNet web site.
You can also check your connection with the Windows IP
configuration utility. Click on the "Start" button, select
"Run," type WINIPCFG, and click on "OK." A
window will appear, showing your IP address and other
settings. You should have an IP address that starts with
"10.2." or "134.114."
Until your machine is registered, you will only have
access to a few sites on the NAU network. You will not
be able to connect to internet sites outside the NAU domain.
Fill out the online registration
form.
If you followed all the steps above, you should have
a working connection. You can register online from your
new connection by connecting to the ResNet web site by
opening a browser. Then follow the instructions.
Once you are registered, reboot your machine.
