Macintosh Setup
If you've
tried the quick setup without
success, here are the complete instructions for configuring
your network connection under Macintosh OS 9x. You may
wish to print them out.
Configure your network software
There are two possible network software packages your
Macintosh could be running: MacTCP and Open
Transport. The
Open Transport is the newer of the two. If your Macintosh
has at least 16 MB of memory (RAM) and Mac O/S System
7.5.3
or higher then Open Transport is the recommended software
as it is more reliable. ResNet does not support MacTCP
based networking. Therefore, you must upgrade to Open Transport
to use the ResNet Network.
Checking for MacTCP or Open Transport
If you purchased your Macintosh within the last year,
Open Transport is probably installed on your machine. Some
recent Macintoshes require Open Transport exclusively.
To check if Open Transport is installed:
- Click on the Apple logo in the upper-left corner of
the screen.
- Select "Control Panels."
If your Macintosh has TCP/IP listed in the Control Panels,
then you have Open Transport. If you see an item called
MacTCP, you have the older MacTCP networking and must upgrade
to Open Transport before you can use ResNet.
Checking the Open Transport Version
To see which version of Open Transport your Macintosh has:
- Open the "Control Panel" then open the "TCP/IP."
- Click "File" and choose
"Get Info."
- The Open Transport version will be shown in the section
titled "Versions."
- Click "OK.'
If your Macintosh has version 1.10 or earlier, you will
need to upgrade.
Getting Your Ethernet Address
To find out your ethernet address in Open
Transport:
- Click the Apple Menu, click on "Control Panel" and
select the "TCP/IP."
- Click on "File" at the top of the
screen and choose "Get Info."
- Your ethernet address can found next to the heading
Hardware Address.
- Click "OK."
Setting Up Open Transport
Follow these steps:
- Double-click on your "System Folder."
- Open the folder called "Control Panels."
- Double-click "TCP/IP."
- Select "Ethernet" from the-pull-down menu
next to "Connect
Via:."
- Select "Using DHCP Server" from the pull-down menu
next to "Configure:" in the Setup area.
- When you close or quit "TCP/IP", your Macintosh
will ask if you wish to save the changes. Click on "Save."
Register for ResNet Service
- You should now have a live network connection, but
your access is restricted to the ResNet
Registration page. For unrestricted access, you must
fill out the online registration form. Open a web browser,
and follow the instuctions. After you have completed
registration, you need to restart your computer.
