Windows Firewall Installation and Configuration

Note about Firewalls:
Firewalls are added protection on the internet. They are not necessary, though they can give internet users the feel of added protection while surfing the web. Nonetheless, Firewalls are also very sensitive and can conjure up many error messages. Furthermore, Firewalls can also cause problems when getting on the internet. For these reasons, Firewalls are not recommended for beginning computer users.

Black Ice Defender v. 3.5

Note: The installation and setup of Black Ice Defender is the same across all recent Windows platforms, and is relatively straightforward. If you have problems installing this software, you should contact the technical support of Black Ice as they would be best suited in assisting you. Contact numbers should be provided with your purchased software, if not please visit www.blackice.com.

  1. The installation and setup of Black Ice Defender is an automated process and requires little more than restarting your computer after installation is complete.
  2. A small shield icon in your system tray (lower right-hand corner of your taskbar) will show you that Black Ice Defender is running. Double click that icon and a new window will appear.
  3. Click on "Tools"…."Black Ice Settings". You will notice the tab labeled “firewall” allows you to change the level of security. The higher the security is set, the more errors you will receive while browsing the internet or sharing files.

  4. It is best that the other settings be left alone unless you know what you’re doing.

Norton Personal Firewall 2003

The installation and setup of Norton Firewall is the same across all recent Windows platforms, and is relatively straightforward. Should you have problems installing this software, you should contact Symantec as they would be best suited in assisting you. Contact numbers should be provided with your purchased software, if not please visit www.norton.com.

  1. The installation and setup of Norton Firewall is an automated process and requires little more than restarting your computer after installation is complete.
  2. A small globe icon in your system tray (lower right-hand corner of your taskbar) will show you that Norton Firewall is running. Double click that icon and a new window will appear.
  3. Click on Alerting Level. The higher the security is set on the slider, the more errors you will receive while browsing the internet or sharing files.
