Macintosh Firewall Installation and Configuration

Looking for Windows firewall installation? Click here

Note about Firewalls:
Firewalls are added protection on the internet. They are not necessary, though they can give internet users the feeling of added protection while surfing the web. Firewalls are also very sensitive and can conjure up many error messages. Furthermore, Firewalls can also cause problems while connecting to ResNet. For these reasons, Firewalls are not recommended for beginning computer users.

OS X

If you have OS X, you do not need to worry about downloading or installing any Firewall software because OS X has a customizable Firewall built in. This is how you can enable it:

1. Click on the "System Preference" icon in the bottom toolbar.
2. A new window will pop up, under the "Internet & Network" category, click on "Sharing".
3. A new screen will appear. Click on the "Firewall" tab.
4. By clicking "Start" or "Stop", you will turn on or off, respectively, the built-in firewall.
5. In the "Allow:" box, there are many options that will affect the firewall. You will probably want to make sure that FTP Access is blocked, as well as Personal Web Sharing Printer Sharing, Remote Login, and Remote Apple Events.
