Disable File Sharing in Windows XP

Disabling File Sharing in 98/ME/NT/2000here. Disabling File Sharing in Macintosh

Check your computer to see if you are sharing folders or your printer:

  1. Click "Start".
  2. Highlight Settings.
  3. Double Click "Control Panel" .
  4. Double Click "Administrative Tools".

  5. Double Click "Computer Management".

  6. Click on "Shared Folders".

  7. Double Click "Shares".

  8. Look for folders such as “print$” and “shared$”, if you have these folders in your Shares folder, please follow the next set of directions.

To unshare your folders:

  1. Click "Start".
  2. Click "My Computer" (or double click My Computer from your Desktop).
  3. Right click on the first folder in your Shared Folders.
  4. Highlight and click on "Sharing and Security".
  5. Make sure you are looking at the Sharing tab
  6. There should be two boxes with checkmarks in them in the bottom half of the Sharing tab window.
  7. Uncheck the very bottom box first.
  8. Uncheck the box right above it second.
  9. Click "OK".
  10. Complete these steps for all folders in this Shared directory.

To unshare your printer:

  1. Click "Start".
  2. Highlight Settings.
  3. Double Click " Control Panel".
  4. Double Click "Printers and Faxes".

  5. Right click on your printer.

  6. Click "Sharing".
  7. Make sure you are looking at the Sharing tab.
  8. Click next to “Do not share this printer”, so a dot appears in the circle.

  9. Click "OK".
