General Admission Criteria

Admissions committees for medical schools will consider the following criteria for acceptance:

Cumulative grade point average, particularly in the basic sciences.   Overall trends are important, and a poor freshman year can be compensated for by subsequent years of superior work.

Scores acquired on the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT).  This exam is taken at the spring of the junior year or fall of the senior year. Visit our MCAT page.

The recommendation of the NAU Biomedical Professions Committee.  Anticipate requesting this and get to know your professors and your academic advisor.

Clinical experience gained through working or volunteering at a hospital, clinic, or other health care facility is essentially required by most admissions committees.   This experience will enhance your knowledge of the profession, as well as demonstrate your commitment when you are interviewed for admission.  It is also extremely useful, in making certain this is the career for you, that you spend some time observing or working one-on-one with a health care practitioner in your chosen profession.

Community service and other extracurricular activities.  Medical school admissions committees look for a record that demonstrates a commitment to serving others, and all activities do not need to be medically related:  tutoring disadvantaged junior high students, coaching an after school sport in a low income area, or volunteering at a soup kitchen, assisting an AIDS patient are all excellent activities.
