Academic Majors
"Premed" or "prevet" are NOT majors at Northern Arizona University.
Successful applicants to biomedical professions schools come from all disciplines; a science major is NOT a prerequisite for admission. Do not select a major with the assumption that it will increase your chance for acceptance; instead, you should major in an area of genuine interest.
Admissions committees are more concerned with the overall quality and scope of your academic record. It is important, however, that your grades in the sciences are superior whether or not you are a science major, for admissions committees need to feel confident that your abilities in science are impeccable.
For this reason, non-science majors are urged to take more than the minimum admission requirements, or to minor in biology or chemistry.
The exception to this advice is veterinary school admissions, which tend to prefer a BS degree in biology or chemistry.
