Bachelor of Science in Nursing
Program Requirements

After completing this program, you are eligible to take the State Board of Nursing licensure exam for registered nurses (NCLEX-RN). We offer this extended major at NAU's Flagstaff, Tucson, Yuma and reservation-based campuses. Program requirements for Flagstaff, Tucson, Yuma and reservation-based students are the same. To earn this degree, you must complete the three components described in the following paragraph:

  • Pre-professional Requirements (at least 47 Units)
  • Liberal Studies Requirements (at least 35 Units)
  • Professional Requirements (at least 73 Units)

*Please note that you must complete NAU's diversity requirememts by taking two 3-unit courses, one in ethnic diversity and one in global awareness. These courses may be used to meet other requirements within your academic plan if you choose them carefully.

Be aware that some courses required for your degree may have prerequisites that you must also take. Check the courses in the appropriate subject. (You may be able to count these prerequisites toward your liberal studies or general elective credit).

Also be aware that NAU requires that at least 30 units of the courses you take for you degree must be upper-divisional courses (those numbered 300 and above).

Finally, please note that you may be able to use some courses to meet more than one requirement; however, you must still meet the total of at least 120 units to graduate. Contact Student Services for details.

Preprofessional Requirements

The following prerequisite course must be completed or in-progress in order to apply to the professional program. Additional all prerequiste courses must be completed with a grade of C or better in order to be admitted to the professional program.

Prerequisite courses required for Admission are:

  • ENG 105 (Critical Reading and Writing) OR
    ENG 101 &102 (College Composition, 2 semesters)
  • Math Foundation (College Algebra or higher)
    MAT 114 (Quantitive Reasoning)
  • BIO 181/181L (Unity of Life and Lab) OR
    CHM 130/151L (Fundamental Chemistry and Lab)
  • BIO 201/201L (Anatomy & Physiology I and Lab)
  • BIO 202/202L (Anatomy & Physiology II and Lab)
  • BIO 205/205L (Microbiology and Lab)
  • PSY 101 (Intro to Psychology)
  • NTS 135 (Applied Nutrition) OR
    NTS 256 (Medical Nutrition)
  • Completed ALL NAU Liberal Study Requirements (See Below)

Liberal Study Requirements

In addition to degree major requirements, all students must complete 35 credit hours of Liberal Studies courses. The BSN degree at NAU requires a total of 120 credits. Students can transfer a total of 64 credits from accredited community colleges. There is no limit to the number of credits that can be transferred from 4-year colleges and universities.

Liberal Studies requirements are:

  • Foundation Requirements (7 Units)
    • English Composition (4 Units)
    • Mathematics (3 Units)
  • Distribution Requirements (25 Units)
    • Science - must include atleast one lab science (7 Units)
    • Aesthetic and Humanistic Inquiry (6 Units)
    • Cultural Understanding (6 Units)
    • Social and Political Worlds (6 Units)
  • Liberal Studies Elective (3 Units)
    • One additional elective course from any of the liberal study requirements.

See the General Academic Requirements chapter of the undergraduate catalog for information about the 35 hours of liberal studies credit that we require. Contact the School of Nursing for information about liberal studies courses that are specific to this degree.

Professional Requirements

You must take at least 73 units of support and nursing courses after being admitted to the nursing program. You must take at least 6 units of support courses in conjunction with the nursing courses.

Support courses are:

  • BIO 320 (General Pathology) (3 Units)
  • SHP 300W (Applied Ethics in Healthcare) (3 units) OR
    any other junior writing couse as approved by the School of Nursing that will fulfill NAU's junior writing requirement.

You must take 67 units of sequenced nursing coursework in five semester

    • NUR 427 (5 Units)
    • NUR 450C (3 Units)
    • NUR 451 (4 Units)
      (Please note that NUR 450C meets NAU's senior capstone requirement.)
