This independent study involves an optional week of language immersion in Antigua, Guatemala,
followed by a week of hands on clinical experience with the Mayan people in the mountain village of San Francisco el Alto.
OBJECTIVES
- Students will be able to describe 3 ways they might adjust their practice to cultural conditions.
- Students will demonstrate physical assessment skills in a developing country, under supervision.
- Students will compare and contrast the health care system in Guatemala with that in the US.
- Students will design a health education tool for those with limited literacy.
- Students will learn to communicate in at least rudimentary medical Spanish in a real world setting.

COURSE PREREQUISITES
Students should be upper divisional nursing students or graduate students, preferably with some
knowledge of Spanish. A total of five students will participate.
