ABOUT KNAU - Northern Arizona Public Radio Profile

KNAU is licensed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) as a non-commercial, educational radio station. KNAU's licensee is the Arizona Board of Regents acting for and on behalf of Northern Arizona University, a nine person board appointed by the Governor of Arizona. Within NAU, KNAU is part of the Office of Public Affairs and Marketing, reporting to Vice President Kurt Davis.

  • White Mountains frequency (Show Low) 90.7 FM (KNAA) 100 watts . A partnership with Northland Pioneer College.
  • Page frequency 91.7 FM (KNAD) 1000 watts. A partnership with Coconino Community College.
  • Kingman translator: 89.7 FM 10 watts.
  • KGHR-FM/Tuba City 89.5.FM also occasionally rebroadcasts KNAU. Operated by Greyhills High School.

KNAU Mission Statement:
Provide significant radio programming to significant audiences.

Staffing: 11 full-time staff, 7 part-time staff, and 3 student interns. Approximately 200 volunteers participate in station pledge drives. KNAU management includes: General Manager John Stark, Program Director Erik Nycklemoe, Marketing Manager Julie Pastrick, Operations Manager Dave Riek, and Business Manager Les Freeman.

KNAU serves a huge coverage area: ranging from Kingman on the west (near Arizona's California border) to Ganado on the east (near Arizona's New Mexico border); Grand Canyon Village and Page on the north (near Arizona's Utah border) to the fringes of the Phoenix metro area on the south. KNAU's coverage area includes both the Navajo and Hopi Reservations.

An estimated 63,000 persons listen to KNAU weekly (source: spring 1998 Arbitron, Phoenix DMA, persons 12+.) KNAU has approximately 3500 paid members across northern Arizona with an average contribution of approximately $72/year.

KNAU is a member of National Public Radio ($175,000 annual dues), Public Radio International ($20,000) and the Associated Press Association ($8,000.)

KNAU is a Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) qualified radio station, meaning that it meets minimum financial and staffing criteria and is entitled to receive federal government funding.

KNAU began broadcasting in 1983. The station's 24-hour, 7 days a week schedule includes: 108 hours classical music weekly; NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Fresh Air, Performance Today, Weekend Edition, and Weekly Edition; PRI's A Prairie Home Companion and This American Life, and independent productions Music from the Hearts of Space, and Stardate.

KNAU regularly enters into partnerships and acts as media sponsor for a number of northern Arizona organizations and events including: Flagstaff Symphony, Grand Canyon Music Festival, Sedona Chamber Music Society , Sedona International Film Festival, Worldfest Flagstaff Film Festival, NAU Spectrum Series, and the Grand Canyon Association.

KNAU Funding comes from a variety of sources.
