One common way that confidential data is
exposed is through a lost or stolen laptop. If you use a Dell laptop for NAU
business, we highly recommend that you ask either the computer support
technician in your department or ITS PC Support to encrypt your laptop to prevent the loss of personal or critical data if your laptop is lost or stolen. It may
sound complicated or seem as if encryption would get in the way of your daily work, but other
than giving up your laptop for a short time for the encryption process, you
won’t notice any difference.
The benefit to laptop encryption is that if you lose your
laptop, no one can get access to the data on the laptop, even if they remove
the hard drive and connect it to another computer. As long as you know your NAU username and
password you can log in to your laptop as you normally would and do your work.
If you forgot your password, the PC Support team has the necessary “key” to
unlock the laptop for you.
This is an easy way to ensure that even if you lose your
laptop, the data on it will remain safe. For more information about laptop
encryption, or to make an appointment to have your laptop encrypted, call the
solution center at 3-1511.
