The Student Technology Center has completely revamped its Web presence to present a unified, easy-to-navigate landing page to services. The new homepage for the STC is designed to give one-click access to the most common help topics derived from surveys, statistics of usage, and temporal information.
One of the daunting problems of Web design, especially with reams of information available, is to determine how best to use very limited real estate. Comprehensiveness comes at the cost of complexity, but clarity and simplicity can cause the user to have to click over and over to navigate to the information needed. With the new design, however, simplicity and comprehensiveness found a workable intersection derived from research on how students actually seek for services.
At the very top of the page is the contact information for immediate one-on-one help. With consistently themed icons and graphics, direct access is provided to the services students request most in nine large buttons:
