SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE - In Special Education and Positive Behavior Support
(Through Spring 2011)

PBS-CARES (Positive Behavior Support — Collaboration, Affiliation, Resources, Education, and Support) is a federally funded personnel preparation project to increase the number of qualified and certified special educators in Arizona to teach students with low incidence disabilities (moderate to severe) and challenging behavior. Scholars who receive financial support under PBS-CARES:

  1. Must attend Northern Arizona University (NAU) either full-time or part-time,
  2. May take courses on campus, through distance learning, or in combination,
  3. Must have completed a Bachelor’s degree
  4. Must be accepted into the NAU Graduate School for:
    • Masters (M.Ed.) in Special Education with Certification, and
    • Graduate Certificate in Positive Behavior Support (PBS)
  5. Must be motivated to address learning and behavior challenges through positive and effective means,
  6. Must commit to teaching students with low incidence disabilities (LID) upon completion.
Funding to support scholars will go towards tuition and fees only. Scholars must sign a service agreement committing to complete the program of studies and to subsequently be employed for a minimum of two (2) years working to support students who have low incidence disabilities and challenging behavior, for every one (1) year of full-time funding (those who are currently teachers of students with LID do not need to change jobs to fulfill this requirement). Failure to meet this requirement will result in the scholar’s repayment of all funds received.

Funding can support scholars at various levels of completing their program of studies:

  1. Those pursuing a Masters (M.Ed.) in Special Education, plus Teacher Certification in Severe Disabilities
  2. Those who already have Teacher Certification, and are pursuing a Masters (M.Ed.) in Special Education,
  3. Those who already have a Masters (M.Ed.) in Special Education, and are pursuing Teacher Certification in Severe Disabilities
Individual advisement will be required in order to help each scholar design the most appropriate individualized program of studies, but in general, scholars must complete 36 — 46 credit hours. Some scholars may need prerequisite courses as well.
