Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports of Arizona
DEFINITIONS
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports of Arizona - PBISAz
- Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports of Arizona (PBISAz) : A statewide
effort to improve the ability of education programs and their staff to address
specific school discipline needs. It differs from other discipline projects
that focus on training for specific behavior management techniques. The PBISAz
project utilizes the “Arizona
School Evaluation Tool” (AzSET) to guide educational organizations in
assessment of their behavior management systems, and how they influence the
behavior of their students.
- Developed by the Arizona Department of Education to address professional
development of school staff in pro-active discipline and positive guidance
of student behavior.
- Is a collaborative effort between the Arizona Department of Education, Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, and University of Arizona.
Positive Behavior Support
Positive Behavior Support (PBS) is a method for helping people improve their challenging behavior that is based on "positive" vs. "aversive" behavior management approaches. Attention is focused on creating & sustaining environments that make problem behavior less effective, and desired behavior more functional.
School-wide Approaches to Positive Behavior
This is a "systems" approach in which policies & practices in a school system are considered along a continuum of behavior support (leadership, school-wide, non-classroom, classroom & individual organizational systems). This system focuses not only on traditional skill-building & staff development, but also on increasing the capacity of management personnel and programs to be able to sustain their efforts over time & personnel change.
