Funding Assistive Technology through the Arizona DES, Arizona Early Intervention Program (AzEIP)

The Arizona Early Intervention Program (AzEIP) is a partnership of early intervention services by various state agencies and private service providers. AzEIP is funded by a piece of federal legislation known as IDEA, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Part C. This law gives primary responsibility for planning and implemention of these services to a single state agency that is designated by the Govenor. In Arizona this lead agency is the Department of Economic Security (DES). Since it can be confusing for a family to find and track all of the early intervention services, the AzEIP brings all participating agencies together to offer a coordinated set of services.

The AzEIP proram identifies children with special needs, provides screening and evaluation services, assigns a service coordinator to each child and helps families find other services. “Early intervention” is simply a name for services which are provided for children, birth to three years old, who have developmental delays.

Eligibility

Children from birth to 36 month of age, who have developmental delays, or established medical conditions known to be associated with developmental delays.

Coverage:

AzEIP provides the following services:

  • assistive technology devices
  • audiology
  • family counseling and home visits
  • nursing
  • nutrition
  • occupational and physical therapy
  • other services related
  • psychological
  • special instruction
  • speech and language pathology
  • transportation
  • vision

These services are designed to help children become ready to learn. They are coordinated by the development of an Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) which is jointly created by the family and the AzEIP Service Coordinator. Assistive technology devices and services identified in the plan must be directly related to the goals of the IFSP. For more information, please contact the state AzEIP office, or one of the local district program offices.
