Assistive Technology Certification Program

 

The Certificate in Assistive Technology program of study is designed to give you in-depth skills and practical competencies in the delivery of assistive technology services. The certificate content is based on nationally recognized competencies. The program of studies may be completed in 16 months.

AT Certificate Program of Studies

Basic skills in assistive technology (6 credits). This 6 credit block of coursework covers core content in assistive technology. Content covers an overview of information about assistive technology as well as more detailed information on funding options, assessment practices and models, and other evidence-based practices in assistive technology service delivery.

Specialization ( 7 hours) This 7 credit block of coursework provides specialization in assistive technology knowledge. Students gain in-depth knowledge in selected areas of assistive technology. Students complete one credit of practicum in an assistive technology environment. The practicum portion of the certificate involves focused, mentored observations of persons using AT and analysis of the factors that influence, both positively and negatively, the use of AT. Students also complete six credit hours of specialization coursework. These courses develop important skills in operational (how does it work?) and strategic (where can I use this?) knowledge. Students select from Applications of Assistive Technology for School Aged Individuals or for Adults. Students select form Assistive Technology Applications specific to Alternative and Augmentative Communication or Sensory Impairment.

Application Project (2 hours) The individually designed application project involves implementing AT devices and services with a person with a disability and evaluating the effectiveness of the AT implementation.
