Mission Statement

The mission of the Institute for Human Development (IHD) at Northern Arizona University is to build and enhance the capacity of an integrated, statewide service continuum for persons with disabilities through the conduct of interdisciplinary training, technical assistance, information dissemination, and research. The IHD values and supports the following for individuals with disabilities throughout the lifespan: (a) independence, productivity, and inclusion in the community; (b) active involvement in the development and implementation of services and supports; (c) the consumer and family as necessary and essential entities through which services are identified, approved, and evaluated; (d) understanding and accommodation of differences in abilities, cultures, values, and beliefs; (e) maintenance and protection of human and civil rights; (f) participation of unserved and underserved populations.

The IHD promotes the student preparation, public service and research mission of Northern Arizona University by providing undergraduate and graduate students with academic training, practical experiences, and research support related to human development and disabilities. IHD grant and contractual partnerships established with various state, tribal, and federal agencies on behalf of persons with disabilities afford IHD trainees a wide range of opportunities to be well educated, informed, and productive leaders.
