...universities and communities working together for persons with disabilities

Core Program Areas

As the Arizona University Center on Disabilities, the IHD is responsible for the development and implementation of six essential core program areas:

Interdisciplinary Preservice Training

Preservice training is developed for students at universities, four-year colleges, and community colleges who major in areas related to disability service and research. The IHD/AUCD provides interdisciplinary training to students from special education, speech pathology and audiology, social work, physical therapy, engineering, nursing, and medicine. Training includes coursework, independent studies, fieldwork, practicum, internship, clerkship, and clinical rotations.

Outreach Inservice Training

Training is also available for administrators, professional practitioners, paraprofessionals, consumers, and families. Outreach training addresses current best practices in areas such as diagnostics, assessment, intervention, case management, communication, physical therapies, cultural diversity, and assistive technology.

Technical Assistance

The IHD/AUCD staff and faculty are available to assist programs and individuals with needs assessments, database design and maintenance, program evaluation, training curricula, policy analysis and development, grant writing, and program planning and management.

Direct Services

The IHD/AUCD addresses issues in service delivery by establishing service programs as settings for trying out new methods and procedures, evaluating different service program models, research, and student and professional training. Services vary from prevention and management of chronic illness among infants and young children to independent living and mobility assistance for adults with visual impairments.

Dissemination

Products generated by the institute are disseminated to service agencies, private providers, and consumers. The IHD/AUCD also identifies and distributes current resource materials, training curricula, information guides, policy and legislative updates, and funding solicitations available through journals, the Internet, professional associations, private foundations, and government agencies.

Research

The IHD/AUCD serves as a research and program evaluation resource for academicians, professionals, private and public service providers, advocacy organizations, and consumers. Research is developed collaboratively with consumers and other constituents to address various needs and solutions in service delivery.
