General Support Services
In this chapter, we describe services and opportunities that we offer to support and enhance your educational experience at NAU, including:

Housing
Although most graduate students choose to live off campus, we do offer on-campus housing in Flagstaff for both single students and families. This includes a special housing option in Sechrist, Reilly, and the Ridge residence halls for students who are more than 21 years of age and/or have graduate status. If you need housing during the holiday break between fall and spring semesters and are over 25 years old, you are encouraged to apply for the Ridge residence hall and to request this option.

You should submit applications for family housing six to eight months in advance. We have one-bedroom apartments for couples without children and two-bedroom apartments for those with children.

To be eligible for single and family housing during fall and spring semesters, you must complete at least 9 credit hours each semester. You must complete at least 3 credit hours during each summer session to be eligible for single student housing; for family housing, you must complete at least 3 credit hours for each summer session or 5 credit hours for both sessions. We may make an exception for one semester in which you are enrolled for thesis (699) or dissertation (799) hours.

You can get more information about on-campus housing by writing to the Office of Residence Life (building 30), NAU, PO Box 6100, Flagstaff, AZ 86011-6100 (520-523-3978).

Campus Safety
NAU's Police Department is responsible for maintaining a peaceful environment, assisting with emergencies, and controlling traffic. We are located at the south end of Lumberjack Stadium (building 34) and are open twenty-four hours a day. Our regular phone number is 520-523-3611; in an emergency, you can call us from any on-campus phone (in Flagstaff) at 911 or 3-3000.

If you need copies of reports, you can come to our office Monday through Friday, 8 to 5. In addition, we issue temporary parking permits when the Parking Services office is closed evenings, weekends, and holidays. Our mailing address is PO Box 5602, Flagstaff, AZ 86011-5602. (fax 520-523-9483).

Parking Services
NAU's Parking Services (building 57) is located at the intersection of Dupont and Humphreys Avenues in Flagstaff, and our office is open from 7:30 to 4:30 Monday through Friday. During other hours, you can get a temporary parking permit at NAU's Police Department at the south end of Lumberjack Stadium (building 34).

If you or anyone visiting you operates or parks a motor vehicle or bicycle on NAU property in Flagstaff, you or they must register this vehicle and display on it a current permit before you park in any parking area on campus.

If you receive a parking ticket, you can, with just cause, appeal within ten business days after receiving it. You can appeal by filling out a form to request a hearing; this form is available from the Parking Services office. At the hearing, the parking appeals officer can either confirm, reject, or modify the sanction specified on the ticket. If you receive an unfavorable decision from the appeals officer, you can appeal that decision to the University Parking Citation Appeals Board. (See NAU's Parking and Traffic Regulations brochure.) The appeals board can either approve or reverse the decision of the appeals officer and/or adjust the sanction.

After you receive a final administrative ruling from the appeals board, you can have that ruling reviewed by the Superior Court of Coconino County in accordance with the provisions of the Administrative Review Act, Title 12, Chapter 7, Article 6 of the Arizona Revised Statutes.

For more information, contact Parking Services, NAU, PO Box 5603, Flagstaff, AZ 86011-5603 (520-523-3591).

Bookstore
The NAU Bookstore (building 35) offers everything from textbooks and general books (including an extensive Southwest and Native American section) to personal and office supplies, imprinted clothing and gifts, class rings, USGS maps, and NAU memorabilia. We also have computer software for IBM and Macintosh computers and various brands of computer hardware, all with educational discounts.

In addition, we provide such services as cutting mat boards, providing caps and gowns for graduation, and preparing personalized graduation announcements. We accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, and Mountain Campus Express cards and have automated teller machines outside.

During the academic year, we are open from 8 to 6 Monday through Thursday, 8 to 5 on Friday, and most Saturdays from 10 to 3. During the summer, we are open from 7:30 to 6:00 Monday through Thursday and 7:30 to 4:30 on Friday, and we post our hours for weekends and holidays.

You can return textbooks with your sales receipt and a valid picture identification card within two weeks of the first day of classes for fall and spring semester and within one week for summer sessions. You can get specific information about time limits and the policies for returning textbooks at the bookstore.

Book Buy-Back
We buy back textbooks at any time during our posted business hours. We accept new and used textbooks from any campus and any semester, as long as the edition is current. We buy books that are being ordered for the following semester at fifty percent of the new book price; we buy others at their year-round market value. You don't need to bring in a receipt for these books.

Please be aware that our policies are subject to change without notice.

Health Services
We offer you basic health services through NAU's Fronske Health Center (building 41) and specialized services through specific clinics on the Flagstaff campus. This section of the catalog also describes NAU's measles immunization and health and safety requirements.

Fronske Health Center
Our goal is to provide you with medical assistance in the best manner possible. Our staff is equipped and trained to help you with complex as well as common problems, such as routine gynecology, preventive medicine, and mental health services. For more information, contact Fronske Health Center, NAU, PO Box 6033, Flagstaff, AZ 86011-6033 (520-523-2131).

Services
Fronske Health Center is an outpatient facility staffed by full-time physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and health educators. We offer pharmacy, x-ray and laboratory services (including confidential HIV/AIDS testing), and our laboratory and x-ray services are comparable to those of a large, fully equipped medical office.

We also offer wellness services, including group and individual health education, weight control, stress management, and health counseling.

Fees for Service
If you are a full-time student, we do not charge you to see our practitioners. If you attend NAU part time, you must pay an eligibility fee for each visit.

We do charge for our lab, x-ray, and pharmacy services, and there is a first-time medical record fee of $10. You must pay pharmacy fees at the time of purchase; you can pay lab and x-ray charges at the time of service or have them charged to your account. We accept cash, checks, MasterCard, Visa, and Mountain Campus Express Cards.

Hours
We are open from 8 to 5, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and from 9 to 5 on Wednesday during spring and fall semesters. Our hours vary for holidays and in the summer.

If you have emergency needs when Fronske Health Center is not open, you should go to Flagstaff Medical Center's emergency room at 1200 North Beaver in Flagstaff.

Referrals
If one of our physicians considers it advisable, you may be referred to a specialist in the community. If so, you are responsible for the fees for such services.

Medical Insurance
We offer optional medical insurance that you can sign up for at registration each semester or at Fronske Health Center. This low-cost insurance helps you pay for lab and x-ray fees as well as care provided at facilities other than Fronske Health Center, such as Flagstaff Medical Center or facilities away from Flagstaff when you are out of town.

Dental Hygiene Clinic
NAU's Dental Hygiene Clinic (building 66) offers comprehensive oral hygiene care to students, faculty, and the public. We charge a nominal fee for our services, and you should be aware that the student medical insurance does not cover these services. In case of a dental emergency, you can contact our clinic for referrals to local dentists.

For more information, contact the Dental Hygiene Clinic, NAU, PO Box 15065, Flagstaff, AZ 86011-5065 (520-523-3500).

Physical Therapy Clinic
Through the excellent facilities at NAU's Physical Therapy Clinic (building 66), you can obtain a full scope of physical therapy services to assist you with your individual rehabilitation needs. Our clinic provides medical billing services for a wide variety of health-care plans.

Speech and Hearing Clinic
You are eligible for diagnostic and remedial services for any speech, language, or hearing impairment at NAU's Speech and Hearing Clinic (building 66), which provides services as part of our training for speech pathologists and audiologists. Our fees are based on a sliding scale, and the clinic is flexible in designing payment plans to meet your needs. Please be aware that we do not provide prosthetic devices as part of the clinic's services.

Health Requirements
NAU has two health requirements that you should be aware of.

Measles Immunization
We require that all students born after December 31, 1956 who register for courses at NAU must provide documentation of measles immunity. Contact Fronske Health Center for more information.

Health and Safety Requirement
If you have a physical or psychiatric illness that becomes hazardous to your health or the health of others, you may be required to temporarily withdraw from the university.

HIV/AIDS Task Force
NAU has a task force to address HIV/AIDS issues within the university. The task force is charged with keeping university policy on HIV/AIDS current by refining guidelines on HIV disease as new information becomes available. This policy is developed to ensure that ongoing education is available for all members of the NAU community and to protect individual rights of confidentiality and freedom from discrimination. The task force is also there to review specific concerns that anyone from the university community might have about HIV disease.

The task force is headed by the director of Fronske Health Center and is comprised of representatives from various university departments that are interested in supporting a healthy and safe environment at NAU in relation to HIV/AIDS issues. For more information, contact Fronske Health Center, NAU, PO Box 6033, Flagstaff, AZ 86011-6033 (520-523-2131).

Counseling and Testing Center
Our purpose is to help you adjust to the university experience so you can succeed in earning your academic degree. To achieve this purpose, we provide supportive personal counseling services, vocational and educational counseling, institutional testing, mental health and substance abuse educational programming, consultation services, specialized services for students with disabilities, and student development research. We are also committed to training future professionals in the counseling field.

If you are a regularly enrolled student, we can offer you individual and small group counseling, through which you can address such concerns as adjustment to the university, vocational and life goals, interpersonal and family concerns, and stress and time management. We also administer such institutional testing programs as the GRE, LSAT, GMAT, and others.

Other services we offer include Project Daylight, a substance abuse prevention and awareness program, and the Peer Support Volunteer Program, though which students educate students about substance abuse, AIDS prevention, and self-esteem and assertiveness. In addition, we coordinate services for students with disabilities and design services to meet individual students' needs. (See the section that follows for specific information.)

For more information, contact the Counseling and Testing Center (building 26A), NAU, PO Box 6045, Flagstaff, AZ 86011-6045 (520-523-2261) or see our site on the World Wide Web (http://www.nau.edu:80/~ctc/).

Disability Support Services
We offer special services for students with disabilities. Contact the coordinator of Disability Support Services for information about this. You need to provide documentation to the coordinator of Disability Support Services at least eight weeks before attending NAU so we can make arrangements to meet your individual needs.

If you have any concerns related to noncompliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, you may bring them to the attention of the coordinator of Disability Support Services. Our hours are 8 to 5, Monday through Friday, with hours extended to 7 on Wednesday evenings.

If you have questions, direct them to Disability Support Services (building 26A), NAU, PO Box 6045, Flagstaff, AZ 86011-6045 (520-523-2261 or TTY 520-523-6906).

Veterans' Services
If you are a veteran or the eligible dependent of a deceased or disabled veteran, you can receive assistance from NAU's Office of Veterans' Services, Gammage Administration (building 1), room 312; PO Box 4110, Flagstaff, AZ 86011-4110; 520-523-4931.

For information about veterans' educational benefits, see the Financial Information chapter of this catalog.

Graduate Minority
Opportunities

Our goal in NAU's Graduate Minority Opportunities program is to increase the number of graduate students from traditionally underrepresented groups who enter graduate school and successfully complete graduate degrees. Our program can assist you by facilitating your admission to graduate programs, helping you find funds for graduate study, and assisting you in locating academic and personal support services.

If you are a prospective student, Graduate Minority Opportunities offers you application and admissions counseling and assists in locating graduate assistantships, tuition waivers, and other financial awards. NAU has allocated assistantships and tuition waivers to our office, and our program staff are familiar with other financial aid opportunities, such as the Arizona Financial Aid Trust Fund.

If you are an enrolled student, our program offers you informal group orientation and individual advice about academic matters, financial aid, and other issues of concern to graduate students. We can also help you make arrangements for tutorial assistance and other academic support.

For further information, contact the GMO coordinator (room 100, Babbitt Administrative Center, (building 51) by writing to Graduate Minority Opportunities, NAU, PO Box 4085, Flagstaff, AZ 86011-4085 or calling 520-523-9652.

Multicultural Student Center
NAU's Multicultural Student Center, located on the second floor of the University Union (building 30), assists students from historically underrepresented backgrounds to fulfill your academic, social, and cultural needs. We help you adjust to the university environment by providing cultural activities, financial aid information, and personal and social counseling. We work closely with the various academic support and student service offices to ensure that your needs are met, including services in languages other than English, as needed, and referrals to appropriate areas.

Our center is both a resource area and a place for students to meet and interact. We keep you informed of center activities and services through a regularly published newsletter. You can also visit our site on the World Wide Web at http://www.nau.edu/~mcsc/.

We also promote sensitivity and awareness of the rich heritage of cultural and ethnic diversity that exists among our students, faculty, and staff at NAU and in the nation. For more information, contact the Multicultural Student Center, NAU, PO Box 5677, Flagstaff, AZ 86011-5677 (520-523-5656, fax 520-523-9444).

International Student Office
We in the International Student Office assist in meeting the various academic, personal, social, and special needs of NAU's international students. We are experienced and trained in the areas of immigration regulations and federal law. We are also available to help you with housing, integration into the NAU and Flagstaff communities, and orientation and special workshops on a variety of topics that may be of concern to you.

Because being an international student carries additional responsibilities as required by the U.S. Immigration Service, you must check in with the international student adviser (in room 102 of the University Union) when you arrive on the Flagstaff campus to verify that you have met those responsibilities.

Other programs that may be of interest to you are the International Association of Northern Arizona University (IANAU) and the Program in Intensive English (PIE). You can get more information at the International Student Office (building 30), NAU, PO Box 6015, Flagstaff, AZ 86011-6015 (520-523-6772). You can also contact us by e-mail (Joan.Fagerburg@nau.edu) or fax 520-523-0515.
