RESEARCH INTERESTS
Mycorrhizal symbioses fascinate me. My students and I study the
relationship between the structure and functioning of arbuscular
mycorrhizal fungi in ecosystems. We are also working to develop
techniques to identify and quantify mycorrhizal fungi in plant
roots and in soil. Our future goal is to study the global biogeography
of Glomalean fungi.
TEACHING AND ADVISING
Active inquiry and critical thinking are the foundations of my
teaching philosophy. I also recognize the importance of providing
information in diverse formats to accommodate the diverse learning
styles of students. I believe that modeling active learning through
research is one of the most effective teaching techniques. Consequently,
I work towards incorporating research activities throughout our
curricula. As director of the NSF-funded Undergraduate Mentoring
in Environmental Biology (UMEB) Program, I help pair students
with faculty mentors for year-long research experiences.
