PIE students in class

PIE students represent many different countries, cultures, and backgrounds. Our students come from all over the world- Asia, the Middle East, South and Central America, Africa, and Europe. This year alone, we have students from China, Taiwan, Thailand, Japan, Sudan, Burundi, Sweden, Honduras, Panama, Mexico, Turkey and Saudi Arabia. Most students enter the PIE because they want a degree from an American university, but some students simply wish to improve their English in an interesting and beautiful place.

Teachers

All PIE teachers have extensive training in teaching English as a second and/or foreign language, and many have considerable teaching experience in the U.S. and abroad. PIE instructors have or are currently pursuing advanced degrees in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and Applied Linguistics. Currently, teachers in the PIE have taught all over the globe- in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, eastern Europe, and the US, in a variety of instructional contexts, including elementary, high school, and university levels. Because of their strong academic and professional backgrounds, our faculty understand how to support diverse learning styles and cultural backgrounds while at the same time helping students develop the academic language skills they need to succeed in their degree programs.

Flagstaff

"I didn’t want to go to a big city, but I like going out and having fun with my friends. Flagstaff was the perfect place to study and have fun, too!"

The Program in Intensive English at Northern Arizona University is located in a safe, beautiful setting with many attractions. Nearby scenic sites include the Grand Canyon National Park, Petrified Forest National Park, Sedona, many national monuments, and pre-historic Native American dwellings. The surrounding forests, mountains and deserts offer a number of outdoor recreational opportunities such as hiking, skiing, biking and fishing. The city of Flagstaff is situated in the Coconino National Forest at an elevation of 7,000 feet (2,130 meters). Flagstaff is a hidden treasure of the southwest. It combines the charm of a small mountain village with the sophistication of a university town. Flagstaff offers something for everyone: great food and music, exciting outdoor activities and beautiful scenery, stimulating cultural and academic events, and cozy cafes and bookstores. The elevation, combined with the Arizona sunshine and the clean air, give the city a wonderful year-round climate. In the summer, Flagstaff is one of the most comfortable cities in the United States, enjoying an average temperature of 65 F (20 C). No location in the American Southwest offers more ideal conditions for study and recreation.
