Welcome to Program in Intensive English (PIE)
Ashurst building in North campus The primary goal of the Program in Intensive English (PIE) is to prepare international students for university success. The program specializes in academic English preparation and support. In addition to language, PIE students learn study skills that are essential for successful performance at university levels. A major benefit of attending the PIE is that degree-seeking students are automatically admitted to NAU as full-time students after successfully completing the PIE and achieving satisfactory English proficiency.
PIE students have access to all university services and activities, including e-mail, libraries, computer services, recreational facilities, social activities, dormitories and student health services.
NAU English proficiency requirements
For Undergraduate students, NAU requires a minimum TOEFL score of 70 on the iBT (internet-based TOEFL), 193 on the CBT(computer-based TOEFL), or 525 in the paper-based TOEFL for undergraduate students, or an IELTS Score of Band 6. Students who do not meet these requirements will enroll in the PIE.

For Graduate students, NAU requires a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (213 CBT/ 80 iBT) or more, depending on the program. Please go to the Graduate College to find the TOEFL requirements for the program you are planning on attending.
