Rationale for the Corpus Linguistics Research Program
The Corpus Linguistics Research Program (CLRP) focuses on analyses and research methods for systematically studying large data-bases of naturally occurring varieties of language. Results of such research projects lead to: innovative resources for language study, deeper understanding of how language is used by individuals and groups in different settings and for differing purposes, and new approaches and resources for teaching languages.

Major purpose of the Program

  • The Program serves as a major clearing house for information and research on corpus linguistics
  • The Program acts as a major resource for research on corpus linguistics, providing access to well established public-domain corpora, newly created corpora, and software and corpus research methods.
  • The Program supports innovative research activities and projects in corpus linguistics, working with students, colleagues, and visiting researchers.
  • The Program provides computer programming training for students focusing on corpus linguistics.
  • The Program employs corpus linguistic techniques to address numerous applied issues, ranging from the development of tools to support language teaching and testing, to broader discourse-based descriptions of vocabulary, grammar, registers and styles, and historical change.
