This tutorial shows you how to create and release a duplicate assessment for a student who qualifies for extended time to take the assessment. Students who have a disability can work with NAU's Disability Resources department to become qualified for this accommodation.
There are four main tasks:
- Create a duplicate assessment that allows extra time for completion.
- Release the duplicate assessment to the student(s) needing extra time.
- Hide the duplicate assessment from students who don't need extra time.
- Create a calculated column in the grade book that combines assessment results.
Create a Duplicate Assessment that Allows Extra Time for Completion
- From the Build tab, select the Assessments tool.
- Select Create Assessment.
- Give the quiz a Title and Grade Book column name.
- Go to the bottom of the screen, and select Base on an existing assessment. Then select the quiz that you want to duplicate.
- Select Save.
- To extend the time, select Edit Properties.
- Keep the all the defaults for the assessment settings EXCEPT change the Duration to equal time and half of the original quiz. For example, if the original Mesoamerican Archaeology quiz duration was 2 hours, the extended-time version of that quiz should be 3 hours.
- Select Save to keep the new duration.
The duplicate quiz is added to the assessments list.
Release the Duplicate Assessment to the Student(s) Needing Extra Time
- From the Build tab, select the Assessments tool.
- Find the quiz that you want to selectively release to the student who needs extra time, and using the action link icon next to the quiz name, select Set Release Criteria.
- Select Add Member Criteria. A window displaying a list of student names will appear.
- Select the check box next to the name of the student who needs extra time.
- Make sure the Equals button is selected, and then select Save at the bottom of the page.
- When you return to the main page, select Save again.
- To show the quiz, use the action link icon next to the quiz name to select Show Item.
The quiz now appears in the assessments list with (Hidden + Conditional) located next to the action link menu.
Hide the Duplicate Assessment from Students Who Don't Need Extra Time
At this point, you have two quizzes:
- The original quiz, which all students can see
- The extended-time quiz, which only one student can see
Now you need to set the release criteria to hide the original quiz from the student who needs extra time.
- From the Build tab, select the Assessments tool.
- Find the quiz that you want to hide from one student, and use the action link icon next to the quiz name to select Set Release Criteria.
- Select Add Member Criteria. A window displaying a list of student names will appear.
- Select Does Not Equal.
- Select the check box next to the name of the student who needs extra time.
- Select Save.
- When you return to the main page, select Save again.
Now both quizzes have the word Conditional associated with them. The Mesoamerican Archaeology quiz cannot be seen by the student who needs extra time, but it can be seen by all other students in the course. Similarly, the Mesoamerican Extended Time quiz can be seen only by the student who needs extra time.
Create a Calculated Column in the Grade Book that Combines Assessment Results
To reduce the number of columns in your grade book, create a calculated column that combines the two assessment results. Then release the new calculated column to the students.
- From the Teach tab, select the Grade Book tool.
- In the Grade Book, you will see two columns: one for the Mesoamerican Archaeology quiz (Meso Quiz), and one for the Mesoamerican Extended Time quiz (Meso Extime).
- To reduce the number of columns in your grade book, create a calculated column that presents the maximum value of these two columns. First, select Create Column, and then choose Calculated.
- Name the calculated column. In this example, it is named Quiz 1 and the Alignment is set to the default of Left. Set the number of decimal places you want, and enter the maximum point value for the quizzes, in this example 2 decimal places and a maximum value of 25. Then select Save.
- After you save the new calculated column, you must add the column formula. Go to the action link menu to the left of the Quiz 1 column, and then select Edit Column Formula.
- To create the function, select MAX.
- Then choose Meso Extime.
- Then select Enter Another Value, which adds a comma to the expression.
- Add the Meso Quiz as the second item in the function.
- To close the function, select End Function.
- Scroll to the bottom of the screen and select Save.

- To hide the Meso Extime and Meso Quiz columns in the grade book, go to the action link menu, and select Hide Column.

- To hide the quiz columns from your students, select Column Settings.

- Make sure the Meso Quiz and Meso Extime Released to Student row items are set to No. If the Released to Student row items for each quiz are not set to No, click the Yes link to toggle to No.
- Make sure the calculated Quiz 1 column is set to Yes.

The expression you created means "Take the maximum value of the two columns Meso Extime and Meso Quiz and display that value in this column."
Now all students can see only one quiz column in the grade book.
