Placement Exams

Students who have had their ACT
or SAT scores sent
to NAU do not need to take placement exams

The Counseling & Testing Center offers Math and English placement exams
year round by appointment and during freshman
orientation sessions. These exams are delivered using the Accuplacer
computer-based system.
- Each placement exam costs $15
- Results are available immediately
- Scores are posted to transcripts within one week of exam date
Please register and pay for your test through the Online
Registration System. Candidates who use the online system will have
priority seating. You can also register and pay at the Counseling
and Testing Center or by phone at (928) 523-2261.
The Counseling & Testing Center accepts:
- E-checks
- Cash, checks, or money orders
- Credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, JCB and American Express)
The math placement exam is for incoming students who
have no prior college course credit (including AP)
in math and do not have ACT
or SAT scores. Students
and incoming freshmen may also take the math placement exam if they would
like to challenge their placement based upon their SAT
or ACT scores.
The English placement exam is for incoming students
who have no prior college course credit (including AP)
in English and do not have not ACT
or SAT scores.
Students who have taken
the ACT or SAT
may not take the English Placement Exam
- A score of 7 to 9: English 105
- A score of 10 or above: English 205
The English composition challenge exam is administered
by the English Department
before the start of each semester. The challenge exam is a written test
of student ability to critically read and write academic prose. Students
qualify for the exam by filling the following requirements:
- ACT verbal score
of 23 or above
- SAT verbal score
of 530 or above
- By transferring to NAU
with English 101, or its equivalent, and with a grade of B or higher.
Passing this exam grants students two credit hours and entrance to English
205 (two credit hours) for a total of 4 credit hours of composition required
for graduation. An application is required to register for this exam.

523-7074. In addition, students who want 4 hours of credit for English
105 should consider taking the English Composition with Essay CLEP
exam.
The Spanish placement exam is required if you have no
prior college course credit (including AP) in Spanish and have some prior
knowledge of Spanish. There is no fee for this exam. Students who take
this exam may consider taking the Spanish CLEP exam. The Spanish placement
exam is available to take on the Modern
Languages web site.
