Eligibility and Cost Information

Am I eligible to receive counseling? All NAU students are eligible for an initial consultation meeting and, if determined appropriate, brief counseling. Counseling Center (CC) services are designed to address short-term issues and concerns; issues requiring longer-term treatment will be referred elsewhere. NAU employees who are taking courses and whose position is "benefit eligible" will need to seek counseling services at NAU's Employee Assistance and Wellness (EAW) office.

Are there charges for counseling services? All NAU students are eligible for their first consultation meeting at the CC no charge. Counseling services beyond the initial consultation have differing costs, depending on the student's account status. Any student who has one or more credit hours and has paid the Wellness Fee that semester (e.g., Fall, Spring, Summer) will be eligible for services at the reduced rate. If the student has not paid the Wellness Fee they will be charged a standard, higher rate for services.

  • Initial Consultation: no charge (1 per lifetime)
  • Individual counseling: $15.00/$30.00 per session
  • Couples counseling: $15.00/$30.00 per session, per person
  • Group counseling: $50.00/$50.00 per semester membership ($50 total - whether 1 or all group sessions are attended; no refunds)
    • Please Note:  The Veterans in School group will be $15 per session or $50 for the entire semester.
  • Emergency services: no charge

Payments must be made in advance. Payments must be made at the front desk and before the counseling meeting occurs. Acceptable payments are:

  • Cash or money order
  • Personal check
  • Credit card (Visa, Master Card, JCB and American Express only)
  • Charged to student account*

Alcohol/Drug screenings cost $50 (This must be paid in advance). This fee covers all the tests, scoring, interpretations, as well as the one-on-one meetings with a counselor to review these tests and to further assess the situation and make referrals. If counseling is recommended at CC or at other community agencies, those specific costs are the responsibility of the student.

Please Note:The CC will charge $15 to your student account for appointments that you do not attend, are more than 15 minutes late for, or do not cancel in advance; this will appear on your account as "Campus Health Services." As done with other NAU charges that go unpaid, NAU reserves the right to turn this bill over to a collection agency. To avoid this charge, please call CC's front desk to cancel your appointment at least 2 hours in advance. This call must be made to the CC at (928) 523-2261 during business hours (Fall & Spring: M-F 8-5, closed for lunch 12-1. Summer: M-F 7:30-4:30, closed for lunch 11:30-12:30). After business hours this number is only for psychological emergencies and not for scheduling. If your appointment is in the first two hours of the morning and you were unable to call and cancel during the prior business day, you will not be charged if you call within the first 15 minutes the center is open (i.e., by 8:15 during academic year and by 7:45 during the summer).

*Charges to the student account will appear on LOUIE as "Campus Health Services" and, as is done with other NAU charges that go unpaid, NAU reserves the right to turn this bill over to a collection agency if not paid in a timely fashion.
