Counseling Services

Eligibility and Cost Information

Am I eligible to receive counseling? All NAU students are eligible for an initial consultation meeting. During Fall & Spring semesters, only NAU enrolled students taking 4 or more credit hours (1 or more for students in a graduate program) are eligible for counseling services beyond the initial consultation. During the Summer Semester, you are eligible for counseling if: (1) you take 3 or more credit hours or (2) you are not enrolled for summer classes, but successfully completed 4 hours in the past Spring Semester and you are already registered for the upcoming Fall Semester for 4 or more credit hours. NAU students living in campus residence halls and taking less that 4 hours credit are also eligible for all services. CTC services are designed to address short-term issues and concerns; issues requiring longer-term treatment will be referred elsewhere.

Are there charges for counseling services? All NAU students are eligible for one consultation meeting each year.* Counseling services beyond the initial consultation cost the following:

  • Initial Consultation: no charge
  • Individual counseling: $10.00 per session
  • Couples counseling: $10.00 per session for the couple**
  • Group counseling: $30.00 per semester membership ($30 total - whether 1 or all group sessions are attended; no refunds)
  • Emergency services: no charge

Payments must be made in advance. Payments must be made at the front desk and before the counseling meeting occurs. Acceptable payments are:

  • Cash or money order
  • Personal check
  • Credit card (Visa, MasterCard, JCB and American Express only)
  • Charged to student account***

Alcohol/Drug screenings cost $40. (This must be paid in advance and cannot be charged to the student's account.) This fee covers all the tests, scoring, interpretations, as well as the one-on-one meetings with a counseling to review these tests, further assess the situation and make referrals. If a CTC educational class is recommended, this fee covers one class registration as well. If counseling is recommended at CTC or at other community agencies, those specific costs are the responsibility of the student.

Please Note: CTC will charge $10 to your student account for appointments that you do not attend, are more than 15 minutes late for, or do not cancel in advance; this will appear on your account as "CTC Servs." As done with other NAU charges that go unpaid, NAU reserves the right to turn this bill over to a collection agency. To avoid this charge, please call CTC's front desk to cancel your appointment at least 2 hours in advance. This call must be made to CTC at (928) 523-2261 during business hours (during semesters: M-F 8-5; during summer: M-F 7:30-4:30). After business hours this number is only for psychological emergencies and not for scheduling. If your appointment is in the first two hours of the morning and you were unable to call and cancel during the prior business day, you will not be charged if you call within the first 15 minutes the center is open (i.e., by 8:15 during academic year and by 7:45 during the summer).

*The "year" is considered from the beginning of fall semester to the beginning of the following fall semester.

**If couples charge is not paid in cash, the charge for $10 needs to be charged to one credit card or student account.

***Charges to the student account will appear on LOUIE as "CTC Servs" and, as is done with other NAU charges that go unpaid, NAU reserves the right to turn this bill over to a collection agency if not paid in a timely fashion.
