Mission

The mission of the Cline Library is to support the curricular, research, and community service goals of Northern Arizona University and its constituents. A central learning resource, the library offers services, instruction, and timely access to information resources and collections that

  1. prepare and develop students in our undergraduate, residential setting;
  2. meet the requirements of graduate programs that support the specialized interests of Arizona and the Colorado Plateau;
  3. reflect an educational environment that is culturally and socially diverse and global in perspective;
  4. support students and staff in thinking critically, acting cooperatively, and expressing creativity;
  5. serve individuals outside the residential setting who are seeking educational opportunities and enable distance learners to participate fully in the educational process;
  6. address the economic and social needs of the state through public service; and
  7. encourage continuous library staff development in pursuit of a highly-trained work force committed to the academic life of the University.

Building Features

Cline Library Entrance

Northern Arizona University's Cline Library is named in honor of Platt and Barbara Cline, distinguished alumni and benefactors of education, who were long-time residents of northern Arizona.

A Cline Library building addition and renovation were completed in 1991 and 1992. The two architectural firms involved in the design and construction were Architecture One and Sasaki Associates. Materials on the building's exterior are primarily brick and Coconino sandstone.

A NAU centennial commemorative sculpture by Budapest artist Péter Párkányi Raab is on display at the main entrance. Párkányi Raab completed "1996: The Year of Science" during his appointment as a NAU visiting artist. The limestone and bronze sculpture was placed at the entrance in the Fall of 1996.

Circulation Desk

The current facility is more than 200,000 square feet and includes a four hundred seat assembly hall. The Cline Library Assembly Hall offers a venue for large university and community events. Consult the Assembly Hall Calendar for public lectures, film showings, etc.

Reading Room Window

The six stained glass windows installed in the east and west walls above the Jean Collins Reading Room were a gift to the library and the University from Jean Collins, Emeritus Dean and University Librarian, upon her retirement. Local artist Vickie Belman of Spiral Mountain Designs created the windows from a joint design with Dean Collins.

Book Stacks

The Cline Library is the keystone to academic life at NAU. To assist students, faculty, and staff in their academic endeavors, the library includes more than 1,400,000 volumes, including 560,000 books; 240,000 government documents; 35,000 maps; 373,000 microforms; 18,000 sound recordings; 10,000 videos, films and other non-print media; and 136,000 bound periodical volumes. These materials are represented in the Library Catalog.

Reading Room

Annually the Cline Library licenses hundreds of electronic information products to support the study and research needs of Northern Arizona University students, faculty and staff. Currently the NAU community enjoys access to the articles found in nearly 25,000 journals and newspapers.

Upon request the Library also borrows and delivers materials that are not included in the Cline Library print or electronic collections. The Library offers this service to students, faculty, and staff of Northern Arizona University and Coconino Community College. Materials available from libraries locally and worldwide are represented in WorldCat.

Significant photographs, manuscripts, oral histories, and motion picture footage documenting the natural and cultural features of Northern Arizona and the Colorado Plateau are some of the sources that comprise the Cline Library's Special Collections and Archives.
