FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT AIR FORCE
ROTC:
1. If I take AFROTC classes, do I have to join the Air Force?
Absolutely not! There is no obligation - we are here as a service to you
so you can check out officer jobs and careers while you attend college.
2. Do I have to wear a uniform every day if I take Air Force ROTC?
No! Just two days a week, on Air Force ROTC field trips, and on base
visits. In addition, you can substitute our official corps T-shirt on
one day, if you choose to purchase one. Remember, we furnish all your
required uniform items.
3. Is this a "guy" only thing?
Are you kidding -- we have women fighter pilots! Leadership is not
gender based. This year over 30% of our students are women.
4. Do Air Force ROTC courses count for credit?
You bet! As general electives for most majors here at NAU, and now we
offer a minor!
5. What are the classes about?
They cover Air Force history, how the Air Force contributes to the
national security, leadership and management skills, what is means to be
an officer, and communications skills and techniques. In addition, there
are a number of interesting and knowledgeable guest speakers from both
the Air Force and civilian community.
6. Do you need a lot of math and science to do well?
No! Most of our students are in non-technical majors: history, business,
criminal justice, education, etc. We are interested in you as a person,
not your major.
7. What if I want to be in a fraternity/sorority or play college
sports?
Please do! Our students are involved in all aspects of campus life -- it
makes them better leaders. We also offer our own service organization,
Arnold Air Society, and we sponsor numerous intramural sports teams.
8. What is in it for me?
Lots of scholarships -- based on merit not need -- that help pay tuition
and books. At this time, we also pay you $200 per month during your POC years (or
if you are on scholarship). Starting 1 Oct 01, freshmen and sophmores
will get $250, juniors, $350, and seniors $400, with increases expected
next fiscal year. We also offer you a chance to part of one of
the best organizations on campus where you'll make friends that will
last a life time. And maybe most importantly, we will guarantee you a
job within sixty days of graduation!
9. If I decide to become an officer, how long will I be in the Air
Force?
For most career specialties, it is 4 years with great pay and benefits.
Pilots and navigators serve longer commitments because of the expense of
their training.
10. How do I get more information?
Come by the detachment in Bldg. 47A or call us anytime Monday through
Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM at (928) 523-5371. Or stop a cadet and ask
them!!!
