First Scholars Program
First Scholars is an initiative of The Suder Foundation,
whose mission is to dramatically increase the graduation rate of
first-generation college students and to prepare each scholar for a life with
self-awareness, success, and significance.
First Scholars is a comprehensive program created
specifically to address the holistic development of first generation students
throughout their undergraduate college experience at Northern Arizona
Starting with an assessment-based selection
process, students apply as
high school seniors for admission
to the selective program. Selected participants will engage in programming
specifically designed for the first generation student.
Our programming includes:
- Development of an individual strategic plan
based on the scholar's Student Strengths Inventory (SSI) results;
- Residence hall experience as a part of a living
learning community (freshmen year) including connected core courses and common
- Progressive Mentoring;
- Group activities include educational workshops,
cultural events, and group and individual service projects; and
- Participation in a student organization based on
the scholars interests.
The program will welcome its first cohort of freshmen in
fall 2014. Selected students receive
personalized support and an annual award of $5,000, which is renewable for a
total award of $20,000 over 4 years.
