Opportunities for research at Northern Arizona University

Each of Northern Arizona University's individual colleges offers several opportunities for undergraduates to conduct research. These opportunities are available in many forms, including:

  • research courses
  • laboratories
  • field programs
  • grants
  • scholarships
  • study sites

Northern Arizona University/National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Space Grant Intern program

The Undergraduate Research Internship (UGRI) program sponsored by the Arizona Space Grant Consortium provides paid research opportunities with a mentor for full-time Northern Arizona University undergraduate students in all majors to work. This Shoot for the Stars story has more information about the Space Grant program.

Ecological Restoration Institute

The Ecological Restoration Institute (ERI) hires students from majors across campus to serve as research assistants on public lands throughout the Colorado Plateau.

Center for Microbial Genetics and Genomics

The Center for Microbial Genetics and Genomics (MGGen) is a state-of-the-art research facility that includes undergraduates on the research teams to study a number of disease-causing bacteria.

Colorado Plateau Analytical labs

The Sedimentary Records of Environmental Change Laboratory invites undergraduate science majors to pursue paid research projects aimed at interpreting past environmental changes by analyzing the stratigraphic changes in various physical and biological properties of lake sediment sampled in cores from Alaskan lakes. Information about the laboratory and examples of research projects is at https://nau.edu/cefns/natsci/seses/research/labs-collections/sedimentary-records/

The Amino Acid Geochronology Laboratory invites undergraduate science majors to pursue paid research projects aimed at determining the ages of fossils by analyzing their amino acid content. The technique is used to solve a variety of research questions that require information about the age of prehistoric materials. Information about the laboratory and examples of research projects is at http://jan.ucc.nau.edu/~dsk5/AAGL/

Read more about both of the laboratories in the Winter 2013 Research Outcomes newsletter.
