Coring at Shainin Lake
vast snowy landscape is located on the north slope of Alaska’s Brooks Range,
far north of the Arctic Circle. Camp was set up at the edge of the snowy runway
on Shainin Lake, still frozen under a blanket of snow after a long arctic winter.
NAU researcher Darrell Kaufman, Regents’ Professor of Geology, and his team were
on a quest to collect sediment cores from the bottom of this lake in order to understand
our planet’s climate history. NAU IDEA Lab filmmakers Dan Boone and Ryan Belnap
were also there to shoot footage for a
documentary about that research. After nearly two weeks of sub-0
temperatures, both the researchers and filmmakers returned home with the material
they came to collect. The movie, Taking Earth’s
Temperature, will be released in the spring of 2014. Photo: IDEA Lab.
