Mathematics/Statistics Placement Test Scores and Course Eligibility

Students must have the proper placement in order to register for mathematics and statistics courses.  Students can establish their mathematics placement by by taking the NAU ALEKS Mathematic Placement Test OR by earning a grade of C or better in an approved college or university mathematics or statistics transfer course (including dual enrollment, AP, CLEP, and IB).

The NAU ALEKS Mathematics Placement Test is designed to accurately measure students’ mathematics knowledge, and will indicate a specific mathematics placement for each student.  It can place students into the following courses: MAT 100, 108, 114, 150, 119, 125, 131, 136, 226, or STA 270.  Students whose score is not high enough for placement into their desired mathematics or statistics course are encouraged to study and review on their own, or with a tutor, or to use the ALEKS Learning Module before testing again.

Most students who are admitted to NAU for Fall 2010 and later will need to take the NAU ALEKS Mathematics Placement Test in order to establish their mathematics placement.

Students who were enrolled at NAU prior to Fall 2010 will be allowed to use their prior mathematics placement scores (pre-dating the NAU ALEKS exam) until Fall 2013.  Beginning with the Fall 2013 term, these students must take the NAU ALEKS Mathematics Placement Test to re-establish their mathematics placement if they have not yet completed the foundation mathematics requirements for their degree programs.

English Placement Test Scores and Course Eligibility

Students must have the proper placement in order to register for English courses that satisfy NAU's undergraduate composition requirement.  Students can establish their English placement by taking the Accuplacer exam offered through the W.A. Franke College of Business Testing Center OR by earning grades of C or better in approved college or university English transfer courses (including dual enrollment, AP, CLEP, and IB).  ACT/ENGL, SATI/VERB, IELTS, TOEFL, and PIE (NAU's Program in Intensive English) test scores may also be used to establish English placement, as reflected in the chart below.  PLACE/ENG scores are used to manually override student placement under specific circumstances.  PLACE/ENG scores are awarded at the discretion of the English department, in line with NAU transfer credit policy.
