PES 100 Group FIT

This course is designed to provide theoretical knowledge and practical skills in preparation to become a group fitness instructor. Topics include guidelines for instructing safe, effective, and purposeful exercise, essentials of class structure, music selection, cueing, injury prevention, and designing and implementing appropriate exercises throughout a workout.  Enroll as a student or non-student; course is worth one credit hour.

Learning outcomes 

Upon successful completion of the course, you will: 

  • understand the principles and methods of training for cardiorespiratory fitness, aqua training, muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility
  • demonstrate the ability to teach a proper warm-up, step, kickboxing, aqua, muscular strength/endurance, including core training and cool-down
  • understand the application of the principles of:
    • exercise training
    • professional responsibilities and concerns
    • exercise evaluation
    • class components
    • calculating target heart rate
    • monitoring intensity during exercise
    • injury prevention
    • demonstrate the ability to select appropriate music based on class format
    • demonstrate proper visual and verbal cues in all class formats 

PES 100 Group FIT Mind Body

This course is designed to provide theoretical knowledge and practical skills in preparation to become a mind body group fitness instructor.  Topics include guidelines for instructing safe, effective, and purposeful exercise, essentials of class structure, cueing, injury prevention and designing and implementing appropriate exercises throughout a Pilates and Yoga workout.  Enroll as a student or non-student; course is worth 1 credit hour.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will:

  • understand the benefits and fundamental nature of Pilates and Yoga training
  • understand the principles of body awareness and alignment
  • demonstrate effective verbal cueing, visual demonstrations and breathing techniques
  • demonstrate proper technique and execution of Pilates exercises and yoga poses
  • demonstrate the ability to lead various portions of a Pilates class (including warm-up, work phase, transitional exercises, and cool-down)
  • demonstrate the ability to lead various portions of a yoga class (including warm-up, sun salutations, transitional poses, work phase, cool-down)
  • demonstrate the effective use of modifications and progressions throughout a workout
  • exhibit the communication skills needed in mind body instruction
